Chicago post-rock collective Tortoise has decided to leave its Chicago-based shell for a little while in September to play some long-overdue live sets in a small handful of cities.

The short trip will coincide with the release of a box set of B-sides and rarities called A Lazarus Taxon. I had no idea Tortoise had a box set's worth of rare material. I suppose that's why it's called "rare". You can see all that for yourself on August 22 when it's released by Thrill Jockey. The band is also working on some new songs for another album that will (hopefully) see the light of day some time in 2007.

Now for those shows. It's been mumbled that more live dates will be added, but only three have been confirmed so far. I have a funny feeling these will sell out with ease, so if you're inclined to stand through a long Tortoise set, start dialing your phone.

9/14 - San Francisco, CA @ Great American Music Hall
9/15 - Hollywood, CA @ Troubadour
9/17 - New York, NY @ Bowery Ballroom
