Obtaining original Beatles ephemera is like winning the lottery. It's like putting a down payment on pop culture itself and waiting to see what happens with it. To think that John, Paul, George and Ringo are anything other than a commodity is less than short-sighted.

In short, be on the lookout for more unreleased Beatles material to be ... released. 500 "lost" tapes were found in the possession of a man named Nigel Oliver. The tapes date back to the infamous "Get Back" sessions of 1969, That was when the band was on the verge of breaking up and needed some quality time together to remember why they were the Beatles in the first place.

Tapes were rolling, and the quartet covered Elvis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and even contemporary artists like Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan. Hours and hours of playing, talking, laughing, arguing - all committed to 500 different tapes. Phil Spector awoke from his drunken haze, took a bunch and put Let It Be together. The rest of the audio flotsam was stored away. Bootlegs of fragments of the sessions came and went but noone knew where the original tapes ended up.

Fast forward to the present. Investigators are led to the aforementioned Mr. Oliver who has documents refering to a warehouse in the Netherlands. Sooner than you can say "I Buried Paul", the door is cracked open and the orginal tapes are found along with a key to a suitcase containing George Harrison's 1960 passport (?). How did they find Oliver? The lunatic placed an advertisement in a local newspaper trying to sell the tapes.

The London Times reports that Oliver was charged with handling stolen goods, but found unfit to stand trial,. He was sentenced to a two-year "supervision order". Neil Aspinall, head of the Apple Records estate and ex-Beatles road manager, spoke at Oliver's sentencing. In some circles, he is also known as Captain Obvious.

“These tapes have huge commercial value. There’s lots of very unknown stuff and music on there that they wouldn’t have recorded in a normal session.”

Insert cash register sound here. Imagine all 500 tapes are released and there is the sound of Paul McCartney saying "Seig Heil" or John Lennon giving Ringo a blowjob? Of course these are very distant possibilities, but who knows what those guys were thinking after all that acid. There's only one way to find out; I'll be on the lookout for the next 10 CD box set.

Oh, Look: The Beatles

So you are actually just trying to say that you don't care right?

Those sessions definitely sound acid-riddled from the numerous bootlegs I've heard, and "Seig Heil" might not be too far off - there's a version of She Came In Through The Bathroom Window that begins with a German count-off and has lots of zany ad libs,m and a version of Get Back rewritten as "No Pakistanis" about the plight of the British losing jobs to Pakistani immigrants. Interesting stuff

Yeah, there's a whole lot of Beatles albums already, but I, for one, look forward to hearing more of these sessions.

Why was the guy found unfit for trial? (If it's in the linked article I apologize for being lazy.)

I grew up listening to the Beatles. Recently (like a few months ago) I suddenly felt that the Beatles were kind of... meh. I didn't think they were bad or anything, but I was kind of like "what's all the fuss about?" I'm back into their music now, but I still feel to some degree that they are overhyped.

Haha! At first I read this as "I grew up listening to the Beatles. Recently. (Like a few months ago)."

Sort of connected the wrong phrases there, didn't I? I was almost disappointed when I realized that you hadn't grown up a few months ago listening to the Beatles.
