On the one hand, you have William Atherton:
The douchiest douche in some of the greatest movies of all time. Not just Ghostbusters "Yes it's true, this man has no dick" and Real Genius "What are you looking at? You're laborers, you should be laboring. That's what you get for not having an education!", but he's also the asshole reporter in Die Hard and the cockhead gun rep in the (underrated) Last Samurai. When you need someone to portray the ultimate in sleazy entitlement, you call William Fucking Atherton.
HOWEVER!
On the other hand, you have Billy Zabka.
A smaller curriculum vitae, but perhaps a more impressive one.
The asshole boyfriend in Just One of the Guys, the dickface boyfriend in European Vacation, hell, dude was even kind of a cock in Summer School. Of course, nothing can touch his Prick Masterpiece as "Johnny" in The Karate Kid. It's the Citizen Kane of movie jerks and it cannot be argued.
Booo. Sure, if you want to go with a 1-dimensional ass-face with no real motivation except 'be every stereotype ever' then you can pick Zabka, with his cool name. But just remember, Ass-holes need at least two dimensions to function.
i would have to go with zabka, but michael bowen is a pretty good movie asshole too. i first saw him as the dick in valley girl:
and some people might recognize him as the rightful owner of this sweet whip:
and he was more pathetic than evil in magnolia, but still a total dick:

Zabka wasn't the dick boyfriend in Just One of the Guys, he was just a dick.
Oh, yeah ... I'm voting Zabka.
Wait, wasn't he the boyfriend of the chick that the guy had a crush on? Or an ex? I don't remember the movie that well, but I feel reasonably confident that he was a boyfriend of some sort to someone. No?

Dude, you forgot Zabka's role as asshole diving team rival in the Rodney Dangerfield classic "Back to School".
I believe this puts him over the top.
Anyone who is defeated by the triple Lindy, a Ralph Machio kick to the face, and loses his girlfriend to a guy in love with a crossdresser has to be in some sort of Hall of Fame.
I don't think he makes it to this rarefied company, but you have to appreciate David Morse's evolution from "Nice Guy who got raped in St. Elsewhere" to constant movie and television bad guy (The Rock, Disturbia, House, The Green Mile, 12 Monkeys, 16 Blocks). Hell, he even plays international super-villain George Washington in the John Adams miniseries.

agreed, however keith gordon always seemed to play especially unlikable protagonists.

Good one!
But, to me, he will always be Arnie Cunningham from Christine.
Even in his other movies, he's still Arnie.
