When Ipecac Records band Tomahawk first surfaced in 2001 with its self-titled debut, rock talk swirled regarding the meaning behind the band’s name and, more specifically, whether or not it was a reference to Native American culture. It didn’t take a genius to realize that, yes…it was. Now with the recent release of its third album Anonymous, Tomahawk has delivered an album that finally bridges the gap between the band’s name and the culture it references. Released June 19, Anonymous is an album based...

Not a comment relevant to the interview, but I have to say, Tomahawk might be my favorite of Patton's involvements. Their live shows blew my head back. Their albums make for quite an equivocal interpretation. And judging by what Denison has to say here, this new one is no exception.

I look forward to hearing any U.S.S.A. material also.

i love mike patton,... i have everything he does and i love it all to his crazy bungle mess to his trip hop love music...

ut i have to disagree with what he says at the start of the interview that this kind of thing is something no other band in rock has done...

all Nile's albums are based on transcripts and stories from ancient egypt..

my two cents hasbeen spent

I've been looking forward to this piece all week. Great job, Erin! 3
I listened to this album last night - it's incredibly rhythmic and moving and even catchy.
Fantastic, and possibly the best Tomahawk album yet, i dare say.

Excellent interview Erin!
I don't even like Tomohawk.
I like, admire and/or respect the individuals
in the band for various reasons, but
every time I've sat down, and heard them,
I just didn't like it, but great review,
and an interesting seed of an idea to
grow an album from.

i've idolized mike patton for his performances (except on the movie "firecracker" - it had nothing to do with him necessarily, but the movie was utter garbage) since faith no more. tomahawk is great (mit gas is one of my favorite albums of all time), but when i first heard this album, even with my bias, my initial reaction was, "aww shit, a bunch of fucking white guys playing around with native american music. they're so far removed from it. . . this is fucking ridiculous". so i listened to it once through and promised to give it another shot. after reading this interview while playing the album in my living room, i can better understand what they've done here and that it's not some kind of academic work - if it was that, i would have passed on it. . . i have add.

anyway, the album's great and these guys never cease to amaze me. great work, erin!

Good interview. Glad to hear Duane's point of view on Tomahawk instead of Patton's. Since, after all, Tomahawk is HIS baby.

I bought the album and on first listen, I was put off. I didn't know I wasn't buying a rock record. But listening to it as background or "wallpaper music", it's a nice departure from the first two records and I can't wait to see how the pieces fit with the older material. Can't wait for a U.S. tour.

On a completely different note, I love Tomahawk's cover of Roxy Music's
"In Every Dream Home A Heartache".
