It's not that it's a boring show or anything, it's that the things that they take as evidence are so, so stupid.

They're actually very picky about what they take as hard evidence. They just want to show their clients as much as they can so those clients can make up their own minds. I totally admire the skeptical attitude of TAPS.

+1

They're very careful about saying whether they have enough evidence to empirically state a location is haunted.

As far as the cold-spot thing goes, the theory is that in order for entities to manifest themselves, they will draw on ambient heat energy. They're usually careful to try to see if there could be any normal reason for a cold spot, such as ventilation ducts, sensor reflections, and other false positives.

I see that you know your Ghost Hunters. wink

I personally would love to try the EVP work that they do. That fascinates me.

I'm not talking about "hard evidence". I'm talking about any evidence.

I don't know about you, but I experience changes in temperature and things brushing by me and random sounds or feelings all time. I'm super paranoid about bugs, so every time I experience something like that, I think it's an insect. It almost never is.

The point I'm getting at is that if you're TRYING to look for any small sign that something might be "X", any small sign of ANYTHING can be interpreted as that.

I just saw one episode where a dude felt a cobweb fall on him. In an old house. That somehow morphed into "something was feeling him on the back of the neck". This was used as possible evidence of paranormal activity, rather than just a fucking cobweb in an old house falling on someone. Which it was.

Which, like... exactly!

But you see, Jason and Grant aren't trying to look for things to be true that have been told to them. They are actually trying to disprove those things. As far as the cobweb scene that you mentioned, that was never used as evidence. It's more of the comedy relief of the show. One member of the staff has a phobia about spiders.

Yes, they are. That's what makes the show. Every minor occurrence is a "WOAH!" or a "I haven't seen anything like that in ages!"

I mean, it's a television show. They are playing for the cameras because it's better TV that way.

Actually, no. It was specifically used as evidence because another member of the team was "also feeling the same thing three floors up". In the debriefing this was mentioned.

I don't think that they purposefully play it up for the cameras. Perhaps that is what is expected of them. The commercial breaks are certainly timed just right. That's why I record it on my DVR so I can fast forward through all of that. I just like to see what they find at the end of it all. Sometimes, their evidence sends chills down my spine. Other times, I'm left feeling flat.

It's all done in the editing room to make it seem more dramatic. I don't think TAPS hams it up for the camera. If you've ever seen the all-night live shows they've done on Halloween, they are really pretty dry.

I used to watch the show regularly, and I've seen them eagerly disprove 'phenomena' that were easily explained by things such as faulty plumbing, bad wiring giving off abnormally high EM fields (that create those weird, uncomfortable feelings), sounds being carried through ductwork or thin walls, mysterious lights actually being caused by a complex series of reflections from passing cars outside, etc.

The two main guys, Jason and Grant, really do try to approach it from a perspective of disproving experiences claimed by the client. Some of the underlings can, admittedly, be too ready to believe claims. Particularly, I find 'Brian' to be a dingus.

Job Envy?
They are about as close to real life ghostbusters as the world has right now. I wonder if they're hiring lawyers?
If not they should at least hire tall people.

How does "these guys have a terminal case of confirmation bias" translate to job envy?

I think more than anything else, the reason i watch it, is because i take everything with a grain of salt, but then my imagination takes over, and then i start getting a little weirded out too.

I am one of those people that is a sincere critic of the subject, but put me in a freaky, old house, with creepy sounds, and if something as simple as a kitten were to brush against my leg, i would probably wet myself and run screaming into the darkness. My own imagination makes the show better.

I however don't get so sexually excited during the show as you do, that's left for Myth Busters.
