The death of this genre is really a tragedy. Books like Roots, and Lonesome Dove could only be told in a mini-series format. Now HBO and Showtime are starting to do mini-series type things but they tend to be a bit more epic, 12 1hr episodes vs the old 4 2hr commercials format. Showtime and HBO also have not touched (correct me if I am wrong) many novels.

The issue is that Novels don't translate well into movie because of the time constraints. they need to be done in a mini-series format, and right now there is no one making the type of mini-series needed so good books are being destroyed into movies.

I would take an old-school network TV version of Watchmen over the monstrosity that is going be dropped on us next march, any day of the week. There is just too much story to be told for 3 hours. Ideally someone would make the 12 hourly episodic mini-series for HBO, but WB is dumb and does not realize what they have as far as source material and means of utilizing that source material in a mind-blowingly awesome fashion.

BTW- the cheesy mini=series were cool as well! V will always be about lizard-like aliens to me!

Are you aware that they are trying to reboot V as a new series?

And to stay on topic; I loved Lonesome Dove, It and The Stand when it aired, but I don't know of any other miniseries that I watched.

My brother just bought it last week, I haven't had a chance to view it yet, though I hear nothing but good things. Band of Brothers was pretty damn good as well.

They still do them on PBS sometimes, although I'm not a huge Jane Austen or Bronte Sisters fan.

Band of Brothers was amazing, as was From the Earth to the Moon. HBO can do almost no wrong.

They are supposedly doing a sequel to Band of Brothers, this time based upon the Pacific front.

Yeah, I've been looking forward to that. It was due to come out next year, last I heard. George Pelecanos is involved in writing the scripts, which is good.

30 Days of Night should have been a mini series instead of a film, I thought. Perhaps the same is true for Watchmen.

Certainly not on NBC or dare to say ABC since they're owned by Disney.

Because of the violence and gore and all that.

I liked 30 days but I have to disagree even if were on HBO or Showtime. smile

Band of Brothers was awesome. A non-fiction novel turned to mini-series by HBO.

Anyone remember when Stephen King's 'It' was aired on ABC? (Was it ABC, or NBC?) Either way, Tim Curry's portrail of the clown scarred me for life. I am forever frightened to tears of clowns, and giant spiders.

HBO has had a couple great mini-series this year alone, John Adams has been mentioned but they also had Generation Kill.

I think that the sci-fi channel does a damn fine miniseries.

The lost room was one of the best things I've seen on T.V.

And their rendition of The stand is one of my favorite childish hood memories....
