You know that feeling you get when you're listening to the words of a song or you're reading a book and you can totally identify with what the author is saying? Reading their words makes you feel as if they've known you your whole life; like they're writing or singing your life's story, directly back to you?

(No? Then this thread's not for you. Go find some musical or literary heroes and come back later. wink)

For the rest of you, who is that writer (musical and/or literary), other than yourself, who absolutely speaks to you and seems to encapsulate so much of your life and what you are about as a person, into their words?

My answer (for better or for worse) would undoubtedly have to be:
Morrissey (circa The Smiths' years) ♥ ♥ ♥

Your turn.

Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley. Their album Take Offs and Landings got me through being twenty.

Regina Spektor's early albums where she takes something usual or a thought and makes it crazy interesting, (Ex: "walking home from work, stop at the super market the condiment aisle, a jar of pickles catches the eye. I made eye contact with a solitary pickle, bought a jar and took it home." ) The way she describes the world is what I try to do in my paintings so I feel she is some type of kindred spirit. I heart her. blush

Morrissey is definitely admirable.

Henry Rollins is alarmingly gifted. As a writer he is talented, on point and brings beauty back to poetry. I admire his gift.

I agree with Jena, I think Rollins comes the closest to myself.

Specifically his spoken words on the widest variety of subjects. From talking about his experiences as a youth dealing with pedophiles. To his release of anger and disgust while touring, drinking, destroying anything he could and partying with Black Flag. To the edification of his mind and developed education while exploring new musical venues with Rollins band. Then turning to his media, news hungry and agnostic view points on how the world is working and breaking beneath our feat with corrupt politicians, under equipped troops fighting overseas, to the simple mockery of our current president by flirting with his wife through a pen pal style letter and speaking candidly about todays corporations, Hollywood and the falling of civilization through a smart ass, grab you by the throat and shake you up verbal assaults.

Minus the band stuff I think the money for me is there...

I've identified a lot with characters by SE Hinton (Rusty), Irving Welsh (Begbie), Francesca Lia Block (Dirk and Weetzie. And Witch Baby, actually), and Hemingway (Brett). Also, Enid from Ghost World. The movie and the graphic novel.

I can't think of any songs that felt really me.

David Drake's characters sometimes illustrate what i am like, and frequently illustrate what i would like to be like.

for music, i like to think i tend towards Greg Graffin, though i'm very much flattering myself with the comparison.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the literature side. As far as music, Paddy McAloon is by far my favorite songwriter.

Imagine two of the most pretentious artists retreating to a cave in the mountains and fisting each other for like, a whole year.

You'd come somewhat close.

Elegant and emotional but ultimately a drunk.

As for me, I'd have to say Charles de Lint, William Least Heat-Moon, Peter Mayle, and in some ways Joseph Heller.
