With Portland adding its name to the list allowing gay marriages, conservative critics and politicians are calling the movement a “culture war” between maverick judges & local/state legislatures and conservative federal and state legislators attempting to block and reverse the marriages in these cities.
As President Bush has said:

"If we are to prevent the meaning of marriage from being changed forever, our nation must enact a constitutional amendment to protect marriage in America," said President Bush on February 25th. "Marriage cannot be severed from its cultural, religious and natural roots without weakening the good influence of society."

The introduction of a constitutional amendment also brings with it a sense of revolution; but it is not a fight between traditionally established groups (conservative and liberal), but between evangelical Christians and secularists and/or non-Christians. Artifacts such as The Passion of the Christ seem to be emblematic of the conflict between evangelical Christians and others, most notably Jewish intellectuals. The recent and aggressive tête-à-tête in the media between Mel Gibson and The New York Times columnist Frank Rich is a perfect example of this increasing tension.

My capital crime was to write a column on this page last month reporting that Gibson was promoting his coming film about the crucifixion, "The Passion," by baiting Jews. As indeed he has. In January, the star had gone on "The O'Reilly Factor" to counter Jewish criticism of his cinematic account of Jesus’ final hours - a provocative opening volley given that no critic of any faith had yet said anything about his movie (and wouldn't for another three months). Clearly he was looking for a brawl, and he hasn't let up since. In the New Yorker profile, Gibson says that "modern secular Judaism wants to blame the Holocaust on the Catholic Church," a charge that Abraham Foxman, of the Anti-Defamation League, labels "classic anti-Semitism." Gibson also says that he trimmed a scene from "The Passion" involving the Jewish high priest Caiaphas because if he didn't do so "they'd be coming after me at my house, they'd come to kill me.[…]Who is this bloodthirsty ‘they’ threatening to martyr our fearless hero?" -Frank Rich, September 19th, 2003

We even see the rise of these forces when someone shows their boob on national television--followed by lawsuits stating that viewers were subjected to "suffer outrage, anger, embarrassment and serious injury."

Ultimately, will these two forces come to blows? What will be the result of this increasing tension around religious prudence in secular democracy?

These type of social conservatives = control freaks.

It makes me sick to my stomach. I say whatever anyone else wants to do with their free time is fine by me, as long as it does not impede the quality of my life.

Yep, the good old days, when polygamy was the norm, a man could beat his wife, who had little more legal status than his slaves. I long for the good old days when despotic, inbred rulers passed out arbitrary judgement on whoever displeased them in that moment. When it was perfectly acceptible for a straight white wasp male to beat, torture, and murder uppity feminists, effete men, jews, blacks, asians and anyone else not considered a straight, white, wasp, male. We need to get back to our traditional values.

Woman, go get me a beer or I'll kick your teeth in!

there were no such things as WASP during the roman empire, and anyway, I thought that women were equal to men during the Etruscan/early/pre-empirical faze of the western roman empire. Bisexuality was standard practice amongst both men and women, and the romans, in spight of having slavery, had no race based written laws as far as I know. (you can go look all that stuff up if don't believe me)

forgive for saying so, but I though the idea of "feeding christian to the lions" only had one historical coantation: Rome. when the hell did you think I was talking about?

ps

-why would a WASP think it was good to feed christians to the lions...that, by definition, means they'd get fed to the lions, right? And anyway, the roman alreadys had slaves to get shit for them...

...man, you can't be ironic with out somebody grossly misinterepting you, can you?...I was simply implying that I wish it still legal to oppress homophobes as much as they opress homosexuals, like the romans did (and that was one of the reasons they didn't like christianity)...I'm well aware of the sex and class based problems that begame standard practice during the later empirical roman age, but it seems like,if your as liberal as as seem to be, you'd be agreeing me, right? confused

"maverick judges" - just another example of the conservative rights manipulative way of spinning arguments. democrats right now should be calling them out on that. whenever the right doesn't like something, they just pretend that everyone agrees with them and that they're speaking on behalf of the American people. Haven't people discovered this trick yet?!!

This seems like the prime setup from the Margaret Atwood book A Handmaid's Tale, arguably one of the best dystopic novel in existence, save 1984 and Brave New World.

I don't agree with Bush that we should outlaw gay marriage, but at least he's proposing going about it the right way; I think Americans SHOULD vote on something this important, rather than leave it up to a few judges. I think we should all have the right to OK or shoot down laws like this.
