Reported missing for over two months, the body of actor/author Spalding Gray was pulled from the East River in New York today.

Gray, who laid bare his life and mingled performance art with comedy in acclaimed monologues like “Swimming to Cambodia” and “It’s a Slippery Slope,” was identified Monday through dental records and X-rays.

and to think the last memory i have of him alive was playing method man's african-american history teacher in "how high."

i suppose a "swimming to cambodia" joke begs itself, but i'd rather show respect, ya know?

He was the one thing that stuck out in my 2 years of community college.
Our art teacher showed us some of his spoken word. frown

This thread is hijacked.

Share your fondest memory of Gray's work, or how you discovered him.

I remember watching a film of him telling a story about eye surgery. I didn't know what I was watching at the time, but I said to myself, "I think this is Spalding Gray."

I remember watching TV when I was about 13 or so and Monster In A Box was on. I remember being completely fascinated with that man.

Still am.

He will be missed.

I saw him do Swimming To Cambodia in New York, before it was a movie. At the Performing Garage, I think was the name, in Soho. Always liked him. R.I.P frown

Such a sad end for a true original, and a very funny, thoughtful man. Peace be with him...

Monster in a Box and Impossible Vacation are where my heart lies.

I have to say I figured the worse had happened when he went missing... He was someone I had listed as certainly someone to inspire me and my own writing.

He will be missed and I hope that his wife and childern will find the strength they need durring this sad time.

At this one video store I used to work at while I was in college, I used to get complaints everytime someone rented Monster In A Box. They would want thier money back (or an exchange) because "This isn't a real movie. It's just some guy talking." I'd ask them if they ever heard of Spalding Gray or bothered to read the back of the box before bringing it to the counter. "No I just thought it would be a comedy."
I hate people.

Kind of morbid I was just looking at pictures a friend who lives around there took of them taking Mr. Gray's body out of the water. These pictures would fit very well in the post a disturbing pic threads that are on these boards.
