So what if critics have somehow failed to recognize quite possibly the greatest piece of cinema ever made. At least they were decent enough to honor Clint Mansell with not only a nomination from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for Best Film Composer, but also a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Film Score in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain. When I started this interview, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I started researching and realized, Jesus, this composer is actually...

Great article. I had no idea Clint Mansell scored The Fountain. I need to see this movie now.
Just wanted to add that Clint's score for Requiem For a Dream makes me want to tear up every time I hear it. I'm glad his talent is being acknowledged. Now if only he could work Beaver Patrol into a film.

The duo Aronofsy-Mansell is one of the best duo ever in filmmaking (Hitchcock-Bernard Herrmann is the other one.), but I think that Mansell by itself shows how much weight on the balance is Mansell's.

Anyhow, Clint Mansell is really good in "don't copy-cat himself", there is always something new, something out of the box creating a new style on each project. This is not easy to achieve, and he does it.

... I'm looking forward to keep enjoying his work.

All I can say is that his Requiem soundtrack soothes my nerves. By that I mean, it threatens me of the depths of depravity that are possible if I don't get on with nerve-soothing by way of yoga or some shit instead of shooting up smack.

Beaten to it! Damn! I wanted to compare his award winning composing to his old Grebo Guru stuff. I wanna hear "She's Surreal" get smuggled onto a soundtrack...

Saw The Fountain yesterday. Great piece of art, but polarised our group... I came away impressed but empty. It's a very simple movie that seems to have allusions to being something greater, and unfortunately lacked the characterisation that would've pulled me into the world created onscreen. Not just that, but I found it a very depressive film that contradicted itself on a number of levels, including having the main proponent of hate and death actually nail the message straight on, making statements and staying neutral about the nature of the concept of the afterlife and showing death and rebirth, visually, as inherently painful. Even its perfection seemed too clinical. As such some of its realist conceits sat uncomfortably next to its statements on spirituality. Other than that, a beautiful film (if a little overly SFX'ed up) which is brave enough to actually make a statement, even if it's the equivalent of a painting that tries too hard to explain itself. Brilliant soundtrack, I'm sold on that...

Great interview. I loved this film and the music was incredible. I remember the last song and how it moved me to tears. I need to get the sound track. It was one of the best love stories I have took into my soul.

Easily one of my favorite films of all time, Aronofsky is so important in the wash of film going through big studios. Mansell's score for the Fountain is a staple of my study music, and some of the most beautiful composition I've ever heard. It doesn't feel forced through midi like big budget Zimmer songs that inevitably all sound the same. What a great interview, awesome!
