"Those who love life do not read. Nor do they go to the movies, actually. No matter what might be said, access to the artistic universe is more or less entirely the preserve of those who are a little fed up with the world." -- Michel Houellebecq

Books and movies aren't part of the "artistic universe"? Fuck people who think they know who can be artistic and who can't, and fuck that guy.
He's saying books, movies, and the rest of the artistic universe are made to escape life, not live it.
life is so many different things to so many different people, it could never be minimalized to the level of "life is this - life isn't that"
ya know?
i agree. what does he consider living life? climbing mountains? and if what he says is true, than who could possibly be considered a "life liver" anyway?

Hm. I think he's saying books and movies are part of the artistic universe, and people who enjoy them (and the artistic universe) must not be "lovers of life" and must be "fed up with the world." But it seems like you could love life and the world and still enjoy/create books, movies, every kind of art ... which themselves are part of life and the world, right? Hm.
