1. Vamp. Probably one of the sexiest vampire films of all time.
2. THE Queen of Studio 54. Who else? Who? Who? NO ONE, that's who. People sweated her like what...?
3. COVERED The Normal's "Warm Leatherette" and Joy Division's "She's Lost Control" and made them distinctively her own.
4. Clothing designers of the time were captivated by what was termed "the perfect breast" (fits in a champagne glass) after a woman like who? Her. A staple of 80s couture.
5. SUPER MODEL for years as a result. The woman is nearly 20 years my senior and doesn't look like she's aged a day.
Would someone please explain to me how Toni Basil is the "definitive counter culture beauty of the 80s"?????
Okay, okay... some background: Was at a bar and talking to a girl about who in the 80s counter-typical beauty-movement best defined how we see women today.
Her argument: Toni Basil defined the whole school-girl-gone-bad motif
Mine: Woman who the media painted up as totally butchy being every bit as sexy
Yeah, school girl is sexy, but a lot of people can dismiss it as fantasy.
That whole "tough looking girl" thing (which any fan of Grace will know is not even what makes her hot, but it was probably the short hair) that made it in to "model beauty" (again, loose terminology, but I'm trying to cut to the gist) totally belonged to her. Grace is hot in a way that you can't measure with a typical standard and I think that's why she deserves cred.
(I acknowledge that there's more to this argument, but since I'm the one telling it... )
Edit: Ha, funny story. So I live in Deutschland (for 9 more days) and I was driving and listening to Antennae Bayern and a song came on and I was instantly, like, 6 years old again. It was We Are the World by USA for Africa. Seriously, I don't think I had heard that song in 20 years and I *just now* realized how old I am.
If anybody's looking for me, I'll be in the fridge.
