Harry Potter and the goblet of fire- the rest weren't that good either, but goblet was an abombination. An everest sized pile of fly trap, if you will.
(although if i'd never read the books, i probably would've loved it)

Of course, the book is an adaption to start with.
Yeah, Hitchhiker's isn't great, but every single version of the story is a little bit different (Radio, Book, Video Game, TV, Play, Film) so it isn't soooooo bad.

this is true, but the film was quite bad.
It just added to much that wasn't needed and most importantly the bits they did add wern't very good or funny.

Seriously? You're going to cite the script Adams wrote as the worst book-to-film transition, when there's shit like Timeline floating around? Or what about The Lost World? What about A Sound of Thunder? The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Or that piece of shit Shakespeare modernization O?

In short, yes. It had the biggest difference between quality of book and quality of movie.
Shakespeare isn't allowed, I think, because people have been butchering it for a few hundred years already.
Great idea for a discussion. How about War of the Worlds? That was a lame movie.
Just thinking: Did anyone think that The Shining the movie was better than The Shining the book? It was one of the few movies I liked better than the book. Weird

Topic over, my fucking ass.
I believe that he co-wrote it. And he was dead for about five years before the movie was made. The amount of influence he had on the actual movie is questionable.

If you're going by that criteria, then The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is clearly the winner.

Am I the only person who liked this movie? I thought it was very true to the spirit of the book if not the plot. But I would say that one of those things is more important than the other.

I didn't really see it as being true to the spirit of the book. They basically turned it into a romantic comedy in space.
