Ben Edlund is a comedy genius. I first discovered his comic book, The Tick, when New England Comics put in one of their ads “A combination of The Punisher and Wolverine!” I was pulled in by this gimmick only to find that The Tick had more in common with Bob Burden’s Flaming Carrot and Sergio Aragonés’ Groo the Wanderer. The Tick is a mysterious big blue wall of justice with his sidekick Arthur. Through 12 issues over five years The Tick became a major cult figure and in 1994 The Tick was turned into...

And Alisa keeps getting more and more perfect.

Anyway, I'm guessing the Mole Men copyright dispute ties to the Marvel character, Mole Man, because of the faintly similar names and that Marvel can be dicks about this sort of thing.

who here just dug out thier Tick issues? i did. man, hes a great writer, but i cant lose the feeling that we've lost one of the great burgeoning artists too. his draftmanship from issue 1through issue 12 kept growing by leaps and bounds. issue 12 is a masterpiece of subtle wry line work.

great interview. clearly you are a tick fanboy and hit him with some very personal (to you) questions. congratulations.

oh, and i still have my tick/ ninja hedge Tshirt. biggrin

The Tick sees a mass of "Ho-Ho-Ho"-ing Santas rushing toward him like a wave and cries out, "It's a Yule tide!" biggrin

I love the Tick, he is an essential part of my happy late teens. I've been waiting years for the episodes of the cartoons to come out on DVD so I could hoard them and admire them sitting on my shelf next to my seasons of Futurama.
I'd heard Edlund was doing some work on the Venture Brothers on Cartoon Network with that crew and there have been some elements that really seem to be Tick inspired on that show. Perhaps I'd heard wrong. Either way, it's great to hear that Edlund is still kicking. Hopefully someone will shove some money in front of him so we can see more Tick related stuff in the near future. I mean the character just begs for some high quality action figures and collectables that would surely appeal to the nostalgic desires of the people who were the show's core audience back in the 90's. I need more mighty blue justice.

That "Tick vs. the Mole Men" episode was the first one I ever saw, and still one of my favorites. It makes me cranky that it's not going to be on the DVD. mad

My favoritest cartoon of all time!

I was never able to find that Man-Eating Cow action figure in the stores. Guess I'll have to go to eBay and look for it one day.

However, I do still have my Tick thumb puppet from Taco Bell!

taped off tv. I need to find that. See if it's still viewable.
I remember the villain with a pig for a leg and the hot air balloon.
