MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann found himself in a mini-email scandal after the New York Daily News got its grubby paws on some mean-spirited correspondence between Olbermann and some disgruntled viewers of "Countdown With Keith Olbermann.”

The trouble started when two viewers taunted Olbermann via e-mail, claiming deceased Al Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was Olbermann's "hero." The two men, who asked not to be identified, refused to reveal the motivation behind the e-mail campaign, but if they wanted to piss off Olbermann, they succeeded. Olbermann responded to the email succinctly; "Hey, save the oxygen for somebody whose brain can use it. Kill yourself." Other enteraining Olbermann responses include:

• "Given how far you are from knowing your ass from your elbow about my industry, you couldn't be stupider, wronger, or dumber ..."
• "Go fuck your mother."
• "You 'Americans' still watching that evil fuck O'Reilly?"

After receiving copies of the emails, Daily News columnist Lloyd Grove ratted Olbermann out to MSNBC bosses, prompting Olbermann to release an apology.

"I apologize to anyone who might take offense at my part of this correspondence. It goes without saying that I should not have replied to these abusive and hateful E-mails, but I wonder how many of us could receive literally hundreds of them questioning our patriotism, religion and ethnic origin, without succumbing to the natural wish to confront such hate?"

Always the hound-dog sniffing-out scandal, Grove delved even deeper into Olbermann’s dark e-mail past, digging up a months-old email about MSNBC’s Rita Cosby, host of "Rita Cosby: Live & Direct." The e-mail, which Olbermann sent to a fan, clearly stated his thoughts about his colleague:

"Rita's nice," Olbermann wrote to a fan from his MSNBC E-mail account, "but dumber than a suitcase of rocks."

Yesterday Cosby retorted: "Keith got it wrong. I'm not that nice."

In the same email, Olbermann also discussed his then-boss, MSNBC President Rick Kaplan.

"And Kaplan?" Olbermann wrote to his fan. "He was the producer of that special last night — now known as the Kanye West Show." It was a reference to an embarrassing incident during NBC's Hurricane Katrina telethon on which the popular rapper departed from his script to claim President Bush "doesn't care about black people."

Through some great luck, Olbermann avoided the wrath of his scorned boss; former anchor Dan Abrams recently replaced Rick Kaplan as head honcho. Olbermann has yet to comment about the e-mails, but when asked if he will now be answering to Abrams, Olbermann concisely replied, "I don't answer to anybody."

If anything, I respect the man more for having badass lines. Btw, I am a firm beliver in the fact that even though he is a public figure, anything he does in his private life should not be questioned... Seriously.. what are we going to do next, pick apart his grammar in the diary he keeps under his bed?

Olbermann has been consistently higher ratings for his time slot, so I doubt he'll get more than a slap on the wrist and a much-deserved vacation. After all, if he had to spend his evenings responding to hatemail for having exposed the likes of Bill O'Lielly for the soldier-sliming scumbags they are, I'd have a few choice words myself.

I've always found him clever and entertaining (his Sportscenter work with Dan Patrick was appointment viewing for me in college) but everything I've heard about him personally suggests his head's as big as a haystack. Dan Patrick has made thinly veiled comments to that end and I even saw Olbermann once jokingly admit that he's got quite an ego on him. He probably has good ground to hold himself in higher esteem than a lot of others, but it certainly comes across as poor form. Particularly when it comes in the form of criticizing co-workers.

Listening to DP a lot, when Olbermann is on there, he always seems a little on edge, about ready to snap at the overwhelming stupidity he is confronted with in the world of sports... I can't imagine how much harder it would be to hold back when dealing with shit like that...

If this story were about O'Reilly instead of Olbermann, could you imagine the amount of righteous indignation it would have generated in this thread? I guess they're called "double standards" because they're twice as nice.

I like Keith Olbermann (going back all the way to SportsCenter), but I think this is childish and weird. Why is he discussing his personal opinions of colleagues with fans? Why is he having personal conversations with fans to begin with? And while telling some chest-thumping "patriot" to kill themselves is a bit funny, it is wholly immature.

That being said, no matter what your personal politics, there is no way we can compare Olbermann to O'Reilly in the Loudmouth Assbag category.

It's kind of off-topic and not that Olbermann should be speaking ill of her, but how did Rita Cosby get on TV to begin with? I thought one of the first requirements of being 'on-air talent' was that you have a voice that isn't grating as hell. The woman sounds like she's either a four-pack-a-day smoker or she gargles ground glass. She could be speaking the gospel truth and I wouldn't want to hear a word of it because of that froggy voice. I keep expecting her to clear her throat and begin speaking normally but I always change the channel 'cause I can't stand it.

Olbermann keeping it real, per usual. Yeah, I can't stand Cosby's voice either. Plus she's a Fox News reject, so I'm not hot on her at all. wink

Olbermann is great. I watch his show whenever I can. He's not afraid to make fun of himself either. When O'Reilly petitioned MSNBC to fire him cause he supposedly had "lower ratings" than Phil Donahue, he did a segment on that and signed O'Reilly's e-petition himself.. along with most of his staff at Countdown.

Oh yeah, also, Rita Cosby sounds like she gargles razor blades daily. Her voice is so annoying and it's obvious she was hired for looks
