So kids, you may or may not realize that its hurricane season again. And I'm a New Orleans girl - which means, I'll probably have to evacuate a couple times between now and September. Our levees are no where close to being finished.

What I am asking is, what city/area should I evacuate to? This year I want to go somewhere interesting. Somewhere that if I get pinned up there for a while, I wont be quite so miserable. I can go anywhere thats a decent drive from NOLA and off the coast.

Any suggestions?

i'm genuinely curious and am asking as i've not had the chance before; i'm not being a smartass here.

if you live somewhere that gets hurricanes over and over, you have to evacuate multiple times a year, etc why do you not just move?

edited to add after checking out your journal (again, this isn't meant rudely):

if you had your home previously ruined in some manner due to the very nature of where you live, why would you move *back*?

Instead of evacuating, I suggest you stay there in New Orleans and let the government take care of you. The US government always takes care of their citizens.

To be fair, a hurricane had not hit New Orleans in several decades prior to last year. I'm not sure that the stipulations you gave (getting hit by hurricanes over and over, evacuating multiple times a year) apply to any place in the US outside of the last 2 years, and even then, the evacuations have pretty much only been in the Keys.

All that aside, I can't wait to get the hell out of this place because I can't stand going 45 minutes without electricity, much less a day or 3. But then, I am not in New Orleans, which is a pretty awesome city.

This was the first hurricane I have ever experiened in my 23 years. Until last year, I had only evacuated twice - many years prior. The reason why we will probably have to leave this year is because the levees that protect our city are not quite finished yet.

Hurricane Katrina ruined my house, it had 8 feet of water. Nothing was salvagable. I lost everything except what I brought with me in a suitcase.

You ask, why do I go back? Because its a part of me. I have travelled to 46 different states and different countries. So I am not naive to other places. But no where I have been has even come close to New Orleans. If you've ever been here, you'll know- theres no place like it. The culture, the music, the food, the hospitality, the laid back pace of life. This citys in my blood. I could have moved anywhere, being that I had absolutely nothing to come home to. But I was determined to come back. I want help and be a part of rebuilding the city that I love.

I'm not even going to touch this comment.

Maybe Memphis. Ive been toying with the idea of Memphis, Chattanouga, or the Ozark Mountains. I want to be somewhere that I would actually enjoy.

It's similar to New Orleans in a lot of the areas that you appreciate. Maybe a little more sterile, and definitely a lot more spread out and inconvenient (it's kind of hard to really accomplish much in Memphis walking). The downtown area overall is pretty dead by comparison, but Beale Street is pretty great. They also have casinos with some really nice hotel rooms for low prices in the Mississippi delta about 8 miles south of the city, so you might be able to get a nice place for only around $50 or so per night.
