I have no desire to read the Davinci Code, or even see the movie for that matter. It just seems like a lot of hype to me. Although, I don't know how they can get away with marketing a non-fiction book as fiction. I think they are missing the point that most religions yes beleive in a supreme being of some sort, but all those relgions don't believe in aliens from outer-space. I have no qualms against any religion, but I do againt this one because i don't consider it a real religion.

I don't want to seem like I'm picking a fight here but I think you've missed Roethke's point.

Hubbard wrote a book and it became the basis of what is now regarded (by its adherents at least) as a bona-fide religion.

Some years ago, a bunch of other people wrote a book (that has since been rewritten, translated, and whatnot) that became the basis of what is now regarded as a bona-fide religion.

It's not clear that when considering malevolent aliens and burning bushes, that one is inherently more or less absurd than the other.

Hence, the "work of fiction" critique is, in and of itself, not compelling.

well, i do understand where you are coming from, and i really do hate arguing on religion. I don't know, some of the stuff I have seen and heard about it just seems off to me.....

WHat constitutes a "real" religion? Many religions don't believe in one great all powerful supreme being, but I doubt you'd say that they weren't "real".

What's the difference between malevalent aliens and say, malevalent entities who live in some place we aren't certain of, who also aren't related to us, yet affect our actions and emotions? The difference is semantics, one is couched in the language of what is already definitely recognised as religious, demons, and one is simply phrased differently.

Beings from the sky who control us in some way sounds like aliens from outer space to me. Angels and aliens have a lot in common, they should have a potluck and compare geneology.

You mean Scientology? Oh shit yeah, it's totally freaky.

But the freakishness of Scientology, and Scientologists, is more complex than simply "They believe in stuff some guy made up!" That could be said of any religion.

They not only believe in stuff some guy made up, then they go out and act like 'tards and bullies.

I agree, they can have what they beleive in but no one should be shoving their relifion down other people's throat's and acting like bullies....this is why i uually7 stray away from discussing religion.

It's funny to hear people calling dianetics a science fiction book. It's not science fiction in the slightest, it's more like really dry boring pseudoscience written in the densest, most impenetrable way. And there must be about 1000000 references to home abortions in there too. Seriously, Hubbard was convinced that every mother attempted to abort their children with knitting needles. Twisted guy.

In essence all Hubbard did was combine his rather poor understanding of buddhism with his even worse understanding of cognitive neuroscience, and dress it up in 1950's "scientifical" jargon.
Later on, when he was doing quaaludes every day he went out to the desert and tripped balls, and that's where all the xenu stuff came from.

I don't recommend that you do. it's more boring and torturous than a 48 hour "who's the boss" marathon.

..I am confoundd as to why Scientologists blow up when someone mocks their beliefs;they could lear alot from Jews and especially from Christians about how fun it is to mock beliefs held by the masses.Maybe it has something to do with the high profile people involved but honestly who gives a shit what anyone thinks about yr belief... Scientology has got interesting ideas but I could never belong to anything or any group who claims that they are the chosen or that they have obtained the book of reality when it comes to REALITY

See, a major difference between Scientology and, oh, every other major religion on the planet, is that the study materials for other religions are freely available to anyone who wants to read them, you don't have to pay for levels of knowledge about other religions, and other religions have people who answer questions about their faith rather than insisting that the questioner join the religion and pay some money to have their questions answered.

Although no other religions say you have to pay in exchange for "knowledge" catholics do say you will go to hell if you don't give the church 10% of your income.

Really? I grew up Roman Catholic and never knew that. Pretty damn sure my devout Catholic grandmother wasn't tithed to the church, and neither was my father...

I'm a pretty devout Catholic--went to Catholic schools through most of my education, go to mass almost weekly--and tithing was never something brought up in my home or in my schools, and most certainly was never something we were threatened with. As far as I know, tithing is a Prostestant thing.
