...This has been on my mind for a while.....how is it that this bothers so many people..
I am JUST CURIOUS BECAUSE I find that throughout commenting there is always the occasional punctuation gestapo hunting me down because I do this........for those of you that are bothered by this;Is it really necessary to take time out of life.....not to mention looking at the girls on this site to comment on this. Can you not follow a sentence because of this ....and feel you must inflict your personal disregard. If so then fine but think of the valuable time wasted when you could be looking at LONDON ,NIXON or any other SG.Give me your opinion wink

Oddly enough I do read things on this site. Constantly using ellipses (incorrectly I might add) makes reading things annoying.

I know I've said this before, but I'll restate it.

Write what you want- Anders is right about that. Just don't expect everyone to understand, or even read what you write. If you're okay with that, then go for it.

And don't get all bent out of shape when people tell you that they can't understand what you write because your typing and grammar are bad.

word. when i see posts that are all caps or filled with internet abbreviations, terrible spelling, or nonsensical grammar, i usually skip over them. so write what you want, but keep in mind that some people just won't read it.

It doesn't bother me. What you are writing, however, isn't an ellipsis. Ellipses have three periods if they are separating two phrases, four if they're at the end of a full sentence. I believe, but I'm not sure, that they should also have a space between them. For example: "I hate that everyone makes fun of my writng style. . . .I happen to like it very much!"

For the record, your excessive use of periods doesn't annoy me as much as your sEEminglY random UsE of CapITal letters doES.

I know it's snooty, but I can't help it. I really do think a little less of someone posting if they can't be bothered to make their posts legible. I don't care about typos, or not using capital letters, or little mistakes or quirks with punctuation; everyone has a different writing style, after all. But if the post just looks like a big old mess, I assume that the person posting is a dumbass.

The ...... don't bother me. Really poor spelling does. The basics, that everyone over the age of 12 should know. There, they're, their, stuff like that, or when people attempt to use big words and haven't the foggiest on how to use/spell them. I'm pretty lenient on how things are phrased, people often write how they talk and don't always realize that it isn't in the proper format. It doesn't bother me enough to mention it, unless the person writing is attempting to sound intelligent/superior. Then it's just free game.

Excessive use of ellipses, especially incorrectly written ellipses, and especially in conjunction with other incorrect punctuation, make it appear as if you are unable to form your thoughts into clear, concise sentences. Occasionally, careful liberty with ellipses can convey a conversational rhythm to one's writing, which might be the intended effect. Most of the time, though, what you're doing just makes you look like an idiot. I think that's why people mention it.

I am unable to to form my thoughts into clear, concise sentences...

If you were this drunk all the time, you'd have difficulty, too...

biggrin

Seriously, I'm all for knowing the rules, but once you know them, you're free to break them, especially if doing so conveys more effectively a tone or mental state that you feel is important to what you're writing.

I know we're talking about internet posts and not literature, but sometimes I get the feeling that some people on this site would gleefully take a red pen to Ulysses, were they to be given the opportunity...

So shove THAT up your Strunk & White's... Haha...

Bullshit. I'm way drunker than that pretty much all the time, and my posts are unfailingly flawless.

Once you know them like a Jedi knows the Force, you can, indeed, break them for the purpose of more effectively conveying your meaning. Unless you have already clearly demonstrated your understanding to your audience, however, they are not going to be give you the benefit of the doubt.
