"Anna Kournikova" of chess causes a feud between nerds.

There's making moves in chess and making moves in night clubs - and you wouldn't think the two would involve the same players.

Think again. To the staid world of chess comes ... Gormallygate.

And at the centre of it is teenage Australian chess champion Arianne Caoili, dubbed "the Anna Kournikova of chess".

British chess grandmaster Danny Gormally had reportedly been seeing and emailing her.

But when he saw her dancing with the world's No. 3 player, Armenia's Levon Aronian, in a Turin nightclub during the World Chess Olympiad he made a move with his fist.

Her mother, Annette, told smh.com.au Arianne was "totally surprised'' when Gormally punched Aronian.

"She's salsa crazy and was probably dancing salsa and looking a bit sexy and that's why [Gormally] got upset,'' she said.

"Chess Queen Caught in Dangerous Nerd-Love Gambit" would have been a much better headline. I should have thunk it through.

Don't scoff at getting punched by chess players:

These guys, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, were both contenders for the world heavyweight boxing championship... both are avid chess players.

Right Here!

Chess boxing is precisely that - a sport that combines chess and boxing. There are six rounds of chess, each lasting four minutes, and five of boxing, each lasting two minutes. The rounds take place alternately, beginning and ending with chess, with one-minute intervals. You win by a knockout in the ring or checkmate on the board. In the event of a draw in the chess and no knockout, a points winner can be declared on the basis of performance in the ring. At least I think those are the rules; I, too, was feeling a little dizzy after my trial fight.
