Tacky topic, yes. But I got your attention.

So here's the thing... I started work on Monday and I will not have health insurance until next Monday. Unfortuantely, nobody told that to the bee/wasp/ who knows that flew up my skirt and stung me on Saturday night.

Normally I hate people that solicit health advice from others on the SG boards, but since I seem to have passed the life threatening phase, I thought I'd just throw this out there...

24 hours after being stung I broke out in a rash. I did not get a good look at the bugger that stung me, but I did pull out the stinger. Knowing I am prone to being allergic to everything I took some benadryl for about 36 hours. The rash went away. But my ass is now a little itchy and black and blue in about a 1 inch area around where I pulled the stinger from. Is this normal? Has anyone every had this reaction? The rash and the throat swelling are gone (I did run to the pharmacist on Sunday night for that) I've just never heard of being so black and blue from a sting. It's been 3 days now!

Please help me and my ass. frown

I am allergic to bees and I was recently stung with no side effects, other than some bruising. The neurotoxins should be flushed out of your system after 24 hours, so I wouldn't worry about any longterm issues. You should be fine.

HOWEVER, if you start feeling short of breath, or feel your throat swelling shut, get the shit to an ER on the fly.

Jesus, I just saw the you had throat swelling. Definitely go to the doctor to the doctor tomorrow and get an Epipen. You may have been stung by a boring bee this time, but if a hornet gets you, you'll be in a load of trouble.

Of course. No matter what the cost, I'm not about to start fucking around with not being able to breathe. I'll be off to the ER right away.

Somehow I've made it to 29 without ever being stung. I feel like a moron, but I wasn't aware there was this much bruising involved. I look like I fell down the stairs on my butt.

I will be off to a doctor. My throat felt a little strange, but the benadryl kicked it right out. But like you said, I am afraid for future stings now.

Yeah, it's unbelievable what a little bee can do, even if you're not allergic. The poison affects everyone, regardless of whether or not they are allergic, so it attacks the surrounding tissue and thus the bruising.

When I was 2, I was stung. My mother noticed me crying and swelling up. On the way to the car, another bee stung me and I almost died.

Giggle.

Yeah, even a little tickle is the early stages of anaphylactic shock.

The stinging was just to divert your attention from his shoe cam.

^^^haha... you have no idea how many people at work I asked to do this. Of course one has to bring it up in the workplace because it is a.) an amusing story. b.) people begin to wonder why I am scratching my butt all day and I felt compelled to make the joke.

P.S. I have yet to have any takers. If you are still interested I may have an available position for you. wink

When I was a kid, and got stung by bees, my mom would mix some meat tenderizer into a kind of gritty paste with water, and it kept the swelling and the pain down.

We did something similar for jellyfish stings growing up in Hawaii.

I carry 2 epi-pens at all times (I've never been stung, so I don't know about bees but I have some serious food allergies). One only lasts for about 20 minutes, so if you can't get to a hospital in that time, you can use the second one and buy yourself another 20 minutes.

Keep in mind also that with serious allergic reactions, each time you're exposed, the reaction tends to be a little worse. Next time you get stung could be much more serious if you're truly allergic, so don't put off getting the epi-pens.
