i am going to go out on a limb and guess that this will not wind up being one of those 'exceptions'. however many there may be.

Now I haven't seen Nurse Betty or In the Company of Men, but I do know LaBute is one hell of an artist. He's not Neil Simon--he's a serious dramatist. Don't count this thing out just yet.

i hear you. i was kind of shocked to see his name on it. perhaps i am too cynical, but i chalked it up to a paycheck. lord knows his previous films haven't raked in the scrilla.

it just seems like a tougher film than most to be able to recapture the magic of the original.... i guess that if the reviews are good, i'll give it a shot. until then, i'm best pretending it doesn't exist. tongue

I think the surest road to failure would be to try and recapture the magic of the original. The best bet, in my experience, is to try and work one's own magic while retaining whatever originally inspired the remake. I mean, just about every good remake I've seen diverged considerably from the original and went and did its own thing.

Nurse Betty was brilliant, btw.

absolutely. i couldn't agree more. the trailer does not lend much hope to that being the case here, though...

I haven't seen the original (though it's in my Netflix queue.). So I can't really say. But I did see some striking images in the trailer, so I might have to see it. Depends on the reviews.

I assure you, the trailer for the remake feels nothing at all like the original. The original isn't really a horror movie; it's more of a quiryk whodunit with an unsettling ending, which really only works because a good deal of the film is infused with a kind of weird levity that puts the conclusion in such stark contrast to everything that led up to it.

Somehow these seems a far cry from Britt Eckland singing "How Do" to get Ed Woodward all hot and bothered... I mean, c'mon how can you beat:

Sergeant Howie: Religious? With ruined churches, no ministers, no priests... and children dancing naked!
Lord Summerisle: They do love their divinity lessons.
Sergeant Howie: But they are... a-are naked!
Lord Summerisle: Well, naturally. It's much too dangerous to jump through fire with their clothes on. biggrin

And, according to IMDb, Ellen Burstyn's character is "Sister Summerisle".

Yeah, man. The original Scarface pwnz that Pacino crap.

There are exceptions to every rule.

There are quite a few exceptions. A Fistfull of Dollars, The Birdcage, Last House on the Left...

If you think A Fistful of Dollars is better than Yojimbo, you're out of your goddamned mind.

Do you think A Fistfulof Dollars is shit? Because no one ever said anything about being better than the original.

Yeah, I kinda think Fistful of Dollars is crap. It's almost shot-for-shot, which is always dumb. And then when it deviates from Yojimbo, I wonder what the hell Leone was thinking. It's pretty boring, actually. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, on the other hand....

Wikipedia(and other sources) aside, Last House on the Left is not a remake of the Virgin Spring so much as they both derive from the same source material, a Swedish folk ballad called Töres Dotter I Vange.

why would alaskans (canadians????) worship an european celtic diety????????

As for the remake is nothing sacred no more??? But if we get to see Nicolas Cage being burned alive, its a small reward.......

They're New Englanders, which explains a lot.

Okay, I've seen the original now. You folks are right. There's no way the remake can work as a remake. It may yet be a fine and disturbing horror movie, and I hope that turns out to be the case.

(It was an interesting watching experience for me, as an atheist. Because on the one hand, I didn't see anything especially untoward about the pagan ritual business. Oh, I don't believe it in any more than Christianity, but some of the side effects like Britt Eckland naked were rather nice. Whereas Sergeant Howie was just such an insufferable, righteous ass about the whole thing. Yet he was essentially the hero and the relatively benign villagers the villains. And yet...well, not to spoil the ending, but while I believed it to be morally wrong, what they did... it never would have happened if the person in question hadn't walked right into it of their own accord. Anyhoo.)
