This week marked the end of Katie Courics stint as co-anchor of NBCs "Today Show." Couric moves in September to the big desk at CBS as the anchor of the "Evening News." One would assume that Courics former colleague Matt Lauer would be thrilled to get rid of his terminally perky sidekick, but this is not the case. Lauer hosted a fundraiser for the Sesame Street Workshop last Wednesday, and took offense when co-host Elmo dissed Couric.
"Katie is moving on to a wonderful challenge, and it's one of those days that reminds me of that very famous saying," Lauer told the Muppet.
It prompted Elmo to chime in: "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, I'm free at last!"
The crowd laughed heartily at the Muppet quoting Martin Luther King, but Lauers composure was clearly shaken. Later that evening, he eulogized the end of the Couric-era to New York Daily News.
"These partnerships are rare, very rare, in television, in an industry where people are discarded all the time," Lauer told Lowdown in the VIP lounge. "To have a person sit next to you for 10 years as co-host is a very special relationship. It's the longest relationship I've had with a female, other than my mother."
That's one of the hottest pics I've seen in a long time. Look at Laurer's face. Tell me that's not a man who's having Katie and Ann make him a sandwitch.
