I'm a supervisor. I have a boss who likes to take the people under me to other areas and then gives me shit when the work in my area doesn't get done. He makes fun of people and is down right degrading to the employees in our pre-shift meetings. Service failures on our shift have skyrocketed since he started. It's taken over a month and I'm just getting my people to realise that I have to do what he says and that it's in no way the way I'd run things, so they're getting better for me, but other areas are just in the dumps. To make matters worse, he's got a frigging sidekick. This kid has his head so far up my bosses ass, you'd think that they were a centaur. They even wore matching outfits on casual friday. This guy walks around acting like the boss, giving orders and "checking to see if I'm doing my job right". If I had to think of an example, I'd have to say that I'm working for Professor Hathaway and Kent from Real Genius.

So dude, your idea of a good employee is one who tells the boss to get over them fucking up and one that ignores the manager being a passed out drunk.

As far as I can tell the only thing your boss has done that is dumb is not kicking your ass to the curb yet.

[Edited on May 29, 2006 by Viva]

My idea of a good employee (in a managerial sense) is someone who appreciates their employees at least enough to give them a free meal (I'm talking food service, here) when he can recognises they've put in a hard day and they're hungry.

My idea of a bad boss is someone who threatens physical harm to an employee in any situation. And as much as you're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to mine, the legal system agrees with me there. You can't threaten people in a violent and aggressive manner when they fuck up.

Managers who think otherwise are a huge problem, and that's no way to run a business.

*

And I don't make $7.50 an hour to hear that because I burnt a pizza I'm ruining their company. I work hard, and I shouldn't have to ask, "Just, can you please be more respectful when you talk to me?" when all I get is indifference and aggrivation in return.

There's only two kinds of bosses. They're either Captain Picard or Darth Vader. No in-between. Right now I've got a female Picard for a boss and I love her to death, but I've certainly worked for my share of Sith Lords.

Well... it's not that my bosses aren't personable, or nice people, it's just that they're dumbasses. They don't know how to do their jobs, and if it weren't for myself and the other employees, the hotel I work at would fall apart.

My boss in an incompitant ass and, worse still, doesn't know it. They don't listen to anything people tell them and have a management style that just puts everyone's backs up. They are supported by equally useless people at "the Big House" who think it's better to blindly support a manager because they are the manager rather than tackle genuine issues which may well lose them a large chunk of their workforce from roles which will not be easy to replace.

There may be Picards out there but here they are Fuctards.

Try again. My last boss was bipolar.
He could be brilliant one moment and the other become a useless piece of abusive shit.

Any boss who shouts at a member of staff is not doing his job properly, and you'll probably find there are points in your employee handbook which make it clear that 'threatening behaviour' on the part of a boss is a sackable offense.
This is why any reputable company has disciplinary procedures in place for staff who 'fuck up', so that they are able to explain themselves in a fair and rational way before action is taken.
If you feel your boss' actions are untoward and make you feel uncomfortable, seek advice from your HR department.
Bosses tend to fall into power trips easily. This is why grievence procedures are in place.
The buck stops with the store manager. If he can't handle that responsibilty and has to shout instead of use the correct investigative procedures, he is probably causes the business to fail and needs to face investigative procedures himself.
This is what I always stress to my staff, but then again, I'm a responsible manager who gets on with my staff who therefore (shock horror) make the business a success for me.
Managers do have to investigate and fire people sometimes, but they aren't as immune to the same action themselves as they would have you think.

Personally, I had to investigate my own line manager last year (I suspected he was stealing) which took a while due to the red tape, but if you go to HR and do things by the book, the guilty party will be forced to pay the penalty in the end. skull

I'm my own boss. The good part is I don't have to hear it when I fuck up. The bad part is if I fuck up I don't get paid. I would rather get called a dumb fuck and still get my pay check.

my boss is one step above mildly retarded. i am serious. the turnover rate for employees in my store is usually 2-3 months.having been there for 2 1/2 months i've seen 2 people quit, 1 person get fired, and 1 person get suspended for stealing, and then rehired. as a part time employee i've been working 45-50 hour work weeks for the past month and a half. he doesn't know how to put in an order, so has his part time employees do it. he puts up the schedule (sunday-saturday) on saturday. he schedules me for times that i specifically told him multiple times that i couldn't work. he writes horribly mean and nasty notes to myself and the 1 other person working at night when he has a bad day. i've actually seen/spoken to him 5 times since i walked in to put in an application. as he is the only manager in the store, this creates quite a few communication problems. people in the day shift never do their jobs, so we have to do their jobs and our jobs just so we don't get horribly mean and nasty notes. we've left notes for him about this 800,000 times, but we're never sure if he actually reads them or just wipes his ass with them. he is an incompetent fucktard who constantly screws up his paperwork, and then when the store gets audited he freaks out and takes it out on the employees. when i quit i'm going to let him know by way of note stuck to the computer screen with condensed milk. that way i'll know he got it.

I like my boss, but he has no drive to grow the business in any way that costs him more time or money, even if the rewards on the backend would be worth its. He's got complacent and kind of lazy. I feel like I'm on an exercize bike here, always pedaling, never getting anywhere.

At least the pay is pretty good.
