I am looking for a different kind of horror film for the bf. I have the feeling Night Watch might be a bit different from the norm. Anyone seen it? What did you think?

Also, can anyone recommend some good horror, something in the style of The Ring, not just a stupid gore fest or your standard, cliched horror film (Hide and Seek type of movie).

I want a horror film that is really chilling and well done in a subtle way.

In the mouth of madness, excellent movie about a horror novelist that disappears to the (everyone thought) fictional town from his books.

The descent, a movie about a group of women going cave exploring and finding something in the cave, great build up of suspense during the first half of the movie.

Dark City. It's a bit of a cult movie. It rocks. If you do decide to watch it, for the love of god, mute the sound until you see a man walk. For some stupid reason, they decide to put a plot synopsis in the introduction of a mystery-horror movie

Ravenous is also a good one, creepy disturbing tale of cannibalism in a remote civil war fort.
perfect blend of horror and dark humor.

Yeah, I second Dellamorte Dellamore. It's English title is Cemetary Man. Only problem is, I think it's only available on vhs..., frown

I came in here to recommend this. One of my favorite horror flicks of all time.

While I suppose it's more of a Thriller than straight up Horror, I just saw this for the first time the other day and thought it was fantastic...

the black and white original version of "Night of the Living Dead". there's a good reason it spawned a million clones.

or...

Wes Craven's "The People Under the Stairs". although i havent seen it in more than ten years i remember getting a laugh out of it. especially the bondage scene...

This thread is amazing! I need to reinstate Netflix asap. My contribution would have to be Frankenstein 90. It's French and completely disasterously insane. It's not along the lines of the Ring though. It's not along the lines of anything really, just way fucked up.

Audition is great--if you have a lot of patience, it's totally worth it. Also, Dead Alive is classic gross out nastiness! And Dario Argento makes a great film (Suspiria)

My friend's mom played the mom in that movie! She would call the house to talk to her and I would be like, scared

Dead Alive (aka Braindead) is one of my favorites, but if ain't a gorefest, I don't know what is :p

As far as J-horror, I really liked Visitor Q and Living Hell.
