So this girl at my work is graduating from high school in like 2 weeks. The other day, a kid brought a gun to school and threatened to off himself. Anyway, this chick from my work said the kid was bullied his whole life and that even one of the male teachers would pick on him on a daily basis--calling him dirty and telling him to comb his hair and shit. She said he's a nice kid and that she always felt bad for him. So he brings all this shit to school and ends up getting arrested. I for one, think bullying should be handled by the teachers instead of being ignored and allowed to seethe and fester in these kids. I just rented the show Freaks and Geeks and if you've seen it, you know that one of the main story lines is the three kids who get picked on constantly. It really is serious and I think they should stop being so apathetic about it. I talked to a teacher about it and she just blamed the parents! I don't know, I think it's getting out of control. Anyway, that is all
Oh yeah--and the article? All it mentions is his stupid girlfriend as the cause. They totally are ignoring the facts-or choosing to at least.
True dat. Teachers always seem to ignore it for whatever reason. At least all the ones I've seen have had that, "Don't be a baby, handle it yourself" attitude. I'm just glad I didn't get picked on once I got to high school.
However, lets not over look the fact that it could have been her fault. I mean, girls have that tendancy to drive you effin' crazy. In any event I'm sure it was probably the coalescence of everything.
Well, I think it's because even the teachers get caught up in the popularity contest. Usually if the star of a sports team is doing it, they let it go. If the kid is a geek, they treat them that way as well. It's so obvious!! And sickening! Popularity is a powerful force indeed. I see it in the work place just as much. Aiy yi yi...
Don't get me wrong... I feel sorry for the guy and anyone who is bullied in school.
But he should damn well be locked up both for his safety and the safety of others.

Exactly. And the problem is that the kids who are victimized are the ones who CAN'T handle it themselves. So either they just put up with hell and hope for a growth spurt or do something drastic and stupid.

Yep! Who even knows what his home life is like. It's just sad and there is no regulation on behalf of the school to try and stop it. That is my issue--not how crazy the kid obviously is or whatever

Me too. I really avoided any real picking on-- I am good at giving "looks". I scared them away in my own quiet seriousness. Damn, it was hard too! I don't know. This shit is horrible I think
I was under the impression that schools were supposed to be taking it more seriously after columbine. In Canada, it seems to be getting more media exposure as a social problem at least. Its a shame that its still such a problem, and its disgusting that a teacher is involved.

You're assuming there was no regulation.
Most schools do take bullying seriously but at the end of the day there is only so much that the staff can do. My high school had hundreds of students and only a handful of staff. They did their best but you can't monitor people all the time.
It is sad when stuff like this happens but I don't think it's fair to heap all the blame on the staff for not preventing every kid from getting picked on every time.
And I'm sorry... but this kid is obviously fucked up.

if only someone would tell them that there is a life after highschool. things will be alright
In my experience, everyone tells you that high school is the best years of your life.
well, i'm here to tell you that's wrong. you have a lot of growing up to do kid.
Well I can't boast more than three years out of high school, but so far it's all been pretty much down-fuckin'-hill. *shrug* I hated high school so much, and God help me I wish I could go back to it.

that's what folks told me. i called them all liars.
i got picked on a lot in middle school. not as much in high school, but the issue was still there. i brought it up with teachers and administrators and not a damn thing was done.
now when i say a lot i mean i would be circled by the 'cool' kids and mocked. on the playground. right in front of teachers. i would try and join a game or even just sit quietly on the bench, and i would be made fun of and picked on. directly in front of teachers.
not a damn thing was done about it. while that may not be the case everywhere, i'm sure there are a lot of teachers and administrators that are aware of 'problem students' and don't do anything about it. the apathy on the part of the people who are supposed to be protecting these students is a huge problem.

High school is good in that (many kids) don't have the level of responsibility or expectations that they will be subject to once the finish. High school sucks because its a shitty little institution that is inflexible, uninteresting, and governed by stupid little rules that don't mean shit. IMHO anyways.

Firstly, I almost wrote the name you are on your radio show in response. This article confirms that I you. Right now I'm listening to U2 Fast Cars (hint, hint for the radio show, although I do have an official request that involves Ian and the Blockheads).....
So, I am not only a geek, I am brown skinned and I grew up in England prior to the laws that make it illegal to spout racist names. My parents assisted me with the feelings of rage and low self esteem that followed me from birth into my late teens, but they were not alone.
There were also a number of teachers that assisted with this issue (the music has switched to Adam Freelands extended remix of Sarah Vaughans "Fever") These teachers who were indoctrinated with the blatant racism of the part London I was living in at the time railed against it, and taught me that there was more to my whole than whatever my peers were saying.
I remember them as both teachers and friends. I also remember that cultural attitudes towards people like myself were difficult * 2. I was != to the societal norm. The geeks disliked me because of my differences, the whole disliked me because of my differences.
However, because of the strong influence of both teachers and my parents I was able to turn into a person that laughs in the face of all prejudice. I am sickened by the apathy of teachers who are not precious like Mrs Docherty, unbelievable like Mrs Whalen, hardcore like Mr Nut and kind Mr Scholl (both US and UK teachers that influenced my life)...
When you truly are living on the outskirts of this world, all it takes is one or two strong individuals to push or pull you in a negative or positive direction. Teachers do have an insane amount of responsibility placed upon them. Unfortunately, a product of the western society is to produce teachers that are only concerned with a paycheck and not concerned with shaping the lives of those they teach.
While in college during Columbine I had a prof who said, "is there anyone here who didn't really want to do this during high school?" Granted, we were a bunch of outcast art school students who were bullied non-stop. But even still the room was silent.
