marilyn manson is not 'goth' or whatever label is in vogue now. he is a hypocrite and an attention whore who's only good songs were covers of other people's creativity. all of his publicity that i've seen has been about how he's trying to open people's minds and force them to accept other views, blah blah blah, but when he was getting interviewed by someone wearing a crucifix he asked them to put it away, because it offended him.
Truer words have yet to be spoken.
b.s. If Manson had not actually made it financially or on mtv, he would be considered a perfect example of goth culture. I don't personally like him, but I've heard enough of his burlesque-style stuff that he could have started a sub-genre. Goths have the same tendency as any other niche group. If someone is persecuted for belonging to the group, they're heroes. If they capitalise on it, they're poseurs
ok, i never said i was 'goth'. in fact i kind of dismissed the whole label by putting it in these little quote things: '...'. i just don't like the whole idea of labels in the first place. why do you feel the need to pigeonhole yourself or anyone else like that? and i never ever liked manson, and thought he was just an attention-whore even when everyone thought manson was 'evil' instead of 'goth'. i don't think anyone who builds their career on someone else's words has any right to claim the message as their own. that is where i take issue with him. if he wants to be a preformer, fine, leave it at that. don't try and tell me that your shock tactics* are some kind of greater message.
*note*: i have no problem with shock tactics. i use them on an everyday basis with idiots and assholes, but i realize that they are just that: shock tactics. i don't try and say that i'm 'enlightening' hundreds of yuppies by telling dead baby jokes and deadpanning sarcasm.
