An interesting fact about blood alcohol content is that different countries use different measurements for judging the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream.

In many countries, the BAC is measured and reported as grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood (g/100 mL). Because the specific gravity of blood is very close to the specific gravity of water (its main component), the numerical values for BAC (%) and (g/100 mL) do not differ to any consequential degree. The simple "percent" metric is more convenient, and is a pure ratio not dependent on any particular measurement system.

This is important to understand if you are to wrap your head around the case of Vidmantas Sungilia, who registered 7.27 grams per liter. This is like blowing a .72 in the U.S. (if my conversion calculations are correct).

Lithuania's legal limit is 0.4 grams per liter.

"This guy should have been lying dead, but he was still driving. It must be an unofficial national record," Saulius Skvernelis, director of the national police traffic control service, told the AP. "He was of high spirits and grinning the whole time he was questioned."

Medical experts say anything above 3.5 grams per liter of alcohol in the blood is lethal for most people.

"A person this intoxicated should be in an intensive care unit, not behind the wheel," said Tautvydas Zikaras, head of the dependence illness center in the country's second-largest city, Kaunas. Zikaras said he had never heard or read of someone being so drunk.

Sungaila, who was slapped with a $1,110 fine and the loss of his license for up to three years, told police he had been drinking the night before and tried to freshen up by downing a pint of beer for breakfast.

The lethal limit .5, and this man was driving, standing, and smiling at .71.

The highest BAC on record is .914 from a man in Bulgaria. The Bulgarian man was conscious and able to communicate.

So, BAC is measured by percentage of mass in both the US and Europe.

In the US, they use grams per millilitre.
In Europe, they use milligrams per gram.

This man in Lithuania had a BAC of 7.27 grams per liter, which is kind of like what one might expect to see in the US.

I'm so confused.

I've added the direct wikipedia entry as it confused the hell out of me, too.

I dislike drunk drivers immensely. Something about posing an immediate threat to my friends and family, I dunno. I hope this asshat shapes up and stops driving while blitzed. Alternately, I hope he totals his car the next time he does it and loses his gas pedal foot in the accident.

Sure. But I didn't end a stupid, silly night / morning like that close to alcohol poisoning and driving a car.

I'd be interested to travel back in time to a couple nights in my "prime" and see what my BAC was. This guy has a serious dedication to his drinking, which is fine by me, but I also totally agree that this guy should not have been driving. I'm a big supporter of the "kill yourself any way you want to, just don't take others with you" theory. (And coincidentilly believe that the second hand smoke theories are bullshit unless you're blowing hits into an infants face.)
