For the record: I don't not think Britney Spears should be breeding.

However...there is not a law in CA that requires baby carseats to be rear-facing-only recommended. So technically, what she's doing is not illegal.

But before all of you smite me-I do have two young children of my own and their carseats were rear-facing. Hell-My 17 month old daughter is still in a rear-facing carseat because she doesn't make the weight requirements to be in forward-facing carseat.

While I don't agree with Britney on her choice of carseat placement, it is not illegal in the state of CA.

However, not securing the child in the carseat would be illegal.

In the state of AZ, it is required by law that children under one year of age and 20 lbs be in a rear-facing carseat. However, it is not illegal if you have the child placed on your lap with or without a carseat while you are driving. So while you would think it would be illegal, in some cases, it may not be.

All I'm saying is that every state is different when it comes to carseat requirements.

The shoulder straps may or may not have been done properly. I can't really tell by the picture (kids heads DO flop around). The only thing that she did not do "properly" was have the carseat facing backwards. The carseat itself could have been secured well enough that if she were to get into an accident, the carseat isn't going to go flying out of the car. However, with Brit and K-Fed as parents, I wouldn't guarantee it wink

seriously, when did this ultra protective culture come about anyway, so her kid is in a car seat not strapped down, who cares. so she sat with him on her lap while driving..... is that really important? what's fucking next? her son skins his knee and people are going to bitch that he wasn't wearing full body armor ?

not one comment i have read here criticizing brittney has seemed like anything other then people being overly critical of someone in the public eye. "i mean, come on i can at least take care of a child like all the experts say i should, i should be the one famous instead of her"

leave the poor woman alone for fucks sake.

Yeah, I mean, she shouldn't have to take good care of the kid if it's inconvenient for her or something.

It'll seem pretty important to her if she gets in even a fairly lowspeed accident while her kid is on her lap... right about the time little Preston gets turned into infant jelly splattering all over her at high velocity when the air bag pulps him.

Or hey, he could just not be strapped down in an accident, in which case he might die when he's thrown around in his seat and his organs rupture, or his little neck snaps.

Ultra protective culture? Is that Martian for "culture that understands the difference between skinning your knee and getting smashed into by a 1,000 pounds of steel moving at 50 miles per hour"?

All valid points, P.

But even more than that, I think one of the reasons she is being made such an example of is that regardless of how many of us think this is common sense, many young mothers may not and she is, like it or not, a very visible role model for many.

Sure, after exam of the law, she has not actually broken any due to her child being above 20 pounds, but her judgment is still kind of not the best in this situation, to say the very least. And this is part of her general pattern of behavior, which she should recognize is being scrutinized and therefore get a clue and tighten that shit up.
