Vince Vaughn and Catherine Keener have signed on to star in the true-life storyInto the Wild. The film project will use a screenplay adapted by Sean Penn from an original book by Jon Krakauer for an emerging division of Paramount Pictures. The Oscar nominated Keener (Capote) will play the woman who picks up the hitchhiker and Vaughn will play a tow truck driver whom he meets through his travels.
Emile Hirsch (Lords of Dogtown) will star in the title role of Christopher McCandless, a recent college graduate and idealist who left his life in 1992 to hitchhike to Alaska and go back to nature, only to have his decomposing body found by a moose hunter four months later. The story will follow those last months of his life as painstakingly researched by Krakauer.
The film is currently in pre-production and is looking at release in 2007.
Somehow, I don't think that Sean Penn of all people is the right man to pen (har har) an adaptation of a cautionary tale about the dangers of reckless idealism.
The positive aspect Christopher McCandless a/k/a Alexander Supertramp death was no one was hurt or died trying to save his unqualified ass. Reckless fool who died because he was unprepared.
Read the book it is very good. Note the difference between Krakauer and McCandless Alaskan adventures. David Robert discusses the collegian Jon Krakauer “On the Ridge Between Life and Death: A Climbing Life Reexamined”
