I'm lost
December 2004

MAY 01, 2006 09:18 PM

This past weekend yours truly braved the heat, the humidity, and the endless traffic of vapid chicks wearing Nicole Richie style granny sunglasses to be at Coachella. Now, Saturday was cool and pretty chill, but then on Sunday night, Madonna happened.

Only Madge can start over 30 minutes late on a tight schedule, then play only five songs, call the crowd “motherfuckers” for tossing water, and then get rave reviews. There was some criticism that she was "too pop" for the festival, and yet, she was estimated to have the largest draw of fans there, even more than the headliners, Tool.

Due to her late inclusion in the festival lineup, the Material Girl was resigned to the third largest venue, the “Sahara Tent.” To say it was bursting at the seams, well, it would be an understatement. Admittedly, I was star struck sitting atop my homegirl’s shoulders attempting to take what may be some of the blurriest photos of the entire weekend. What was even more telling were the droves of people we witnessed crowding the exits directly after the set.

Even with a faux English accent, it seems the old girl’s still got it.

Jesus, Madge, put away the guns! You're scaring me with those things! Seriously, I wouldn't arm wrestle her with my leg.

Wow.

If someone had asked me what celebrity you wouldn't bash, Madonna wouldn't have been anywhere near my list of choices.

I hope Les Paul is rolling over in his grave right now....I SERIOUSLY doubt he designed his guitar to be played by, of ALL people, MADONNA! Does she even konw how to play that thing? Geez....

can we please leave the guitar playing to the masters?

Daft Punk rocked my world way harder than Madonna or Tool. They had the sound way down in the tent for Madnonna and it couldn't hold a candle to DP. Tool was awesome, btw, but from where I was it was like watching a DVD of a tool concert in the desert.

They make me cry too.

Someone should smash her over the head with it.

Pete Townshend would.

Those write-ups by ABC and USA Today positively reek of Madonna's PR flacks.

There was some criticism that she was "too pop" for the festival, and yet, she was estimated to have the largest draw of fans there, even more than the headliners, Tool.

Estimated by whom, her PR firm? There is no way that Madonna out-drew Tool. Compared to the Sahara tent, the Main Stage was much bigger and Tool had people watching them 3/4 of the way to the exit. What they also fail to mention is that there was massive foot traffic going to and from Madonna's set the entire time. MANY people came to get a glimpse and left after a few minutes. (One of the people in my group really wanted to catch a glimpse. We left after less than 5 minutes.) People were leaving droves complaining about how much she sucked. For many people, she was a curiousity at best.

Giant screens were set up so the overflow crowds could see.

BFD, so did Daft Punk (playing on the same stage the previous night). BTW, I'd say that DP drew at least as many people who actually stayed to watch the show as Madonna did.

There were a ton of great bands that played this weekend and the best that USA Today and ABC can do are write-ups on Madonna and James Blunt (who?). Lame. whatever

You think? I think Pete Townshend would invite her in for tea and to see his collection.

They do totally sound like public relations spins, which when I saw them, I was surprised by, hence why I listed all of the shitty parts from my own perception. With the exception of the last song, she sounded canned and I was shocked to read that the concert promoters gauged there to be a larger audience there than present for Tool, seeing as it would be a very difficult thing to judge, especially because they were different stages.

I wrote this because it is not a music story, there was nothing newsworthy in her performance from a musical standpoint, except the divaesque behavior which makes her the star that can pull in so many people if only to say they have seen Madonna in concert. Our group was there largely for this reason, and also to leave SMuffy messages of the concert.

Also, Daft Punk was excellent. They were clearly underbilled in the press.

Yeah, yeah, I know, dude was GOOD. But, uh, setting a guitar on fire isn't of itself a masterly display of musicianship.

I definitely don't want you to think I was being critical of your post. I was merely pointing out that the ABC and USA Today articles were misleading, to say the least.
