The New York Timesprofiles Allan MacDonell, the man behind Prisoner of X: 20 Years in the Hole at Hustler Magazine. Apparently, when your boss wears a jewel-encrusted platinum vagina pendant on a chain around his neck, office stories make for a book-length work. MacDonell concocted the idea of working for Hustler when he got caught in the bathroom with Hustler in hand and told his first wife he was reading the articles as research in hopes of one day writing for the magazine. He went on to do just that and spent 20 years working for Flynt, eventually become Hustler's executive editor, covering subjects ranging from cheating advice to UFO date rape. Three years ago, MacDonell was fired in what Flynt deemed an effort to clean house. Since, MacDonell says he's seen only one pornographic video--and experiences no withdrawl symptoms.
Mr. MacDonell still misses being at a magazine, he said, and he wouldn't mind working at another one someday, though, with his résumé, he doesn't imagine that that's about to happen right away. Now that "Prisoner of X" is done, he is working on some screenplays and has an idea for a book-length expansion of an article he once wrote for Hustler: "Creeps: Why Women Love Us."
