What's hot on campus these days? Student-produced porn magazines, apparently. At the University of Chicago, Harvard, and Yale, college students are publishing porn for the academic set in Vita Excolatur, H Bomb, and Sex Week at Yale: The Magazine. The nu-porn publications attempt to wed the sexual and the intellectual--and take the taboo out of talking about sex. There are nude photographs in some, but explicitness is regulated by their institutions, some of which support, and some of which frown upon, the magazines. But, not everybody is a subscriber to the pro-porn attitude.

Pamela Paul, author of the 2005 book "Pornified: How Pornography Is Transforming Our Lives, Our Relationships and Our Families," said the sex magazines represented a 180-degree shift in college women's attitudes toward pornography in just the 15 years since she attended Brown University.

"Porn is cool, porn is hip, porn is not something to get upset about on college campuses today," Ms. Paul said. "College women have really bought into both the pornography industry's way of spinning porn — this is hip, sexy, harmless entertainment and women should really get in on it — and the new academic perspective on pornography — as long as we own our sexuality and it's our choice, then, great, more power to us."

She describes the trend as "pathetic."

It begs the ancient joke about women who don't like porn...

"She must not be pretty enough to be in it."

You damn well better duck if you're going to make comments like that...and probably get yourself some cover, too.

Very few things about to do with sex, aside from the genuine article, are exciting. It's like beating a dead horse. Except it's not a horse, and hopefully it's not dead...

I agree. Porn is supposed to be "taboo". And acting like being in porn is some sort of enlightened feminist statement is silly.

People like seeing certain other people naked and/or involved in sexual acts. People are paid to be filmed or photographed naked and/or involved in sexual acts. That's all there is to it.

I love porn. I have roughly 40G of porn. But it's not some sort of social statement, it's not "hip" or anything like that. It's porn.

Also, shouldn't students have more important things to do (I dunno...learning stuff?) than publishing porn mags? Call me old-fashioned, but, uhm...WTF?

I apologize for making an off color joke that could potentially be misinterpreted. I apologize for assuming that posting it as an ancient joke would imply that I was cracking a joke and therefore not serious. You know what they say... when you assume, you make an ass out of Uma Thurman. I apologize for whatever other various ills that I have committed that I don't know about.

the more one takes ownership of their sexuality the more power they have. the Aust govt did a study on weahter porn denigrates or empowers women and found that it strongly empowers them as they have the power to say yes or no.

Plus how can anyone not like boobies the more boobies the better the world i say.

Bah, there's a fetish for everything. Pretty has nothing to do with it.

I think porn can be hazardous. Like TV -- the masses worked into apathy can forgive more and more each day. It can warp our perceptions of satisfaction.

You are correct, sir! There has been no sarcasm in this entire post. It has been entirely joke free. You caught me and I've just been covering the entire time.

X

PS, while it may not have been joke free, it's entirely possible that the entire thread has been humor free. That's in the ear of the behearer, though.

Spoiler: This is joke (and likely humor) free

The problem with perceptions of satisfaction is that they are just that, perceptions. Sure, porn makes you think that the women that you're watching are a sexual ideal. So did the pinups from the 40s, flappers from the 20s, JC Penney catalogs from the 1900s thru the 1980s, etc, etc, etc. "Sexual repression leads to sexual perversion." I can cite examples beyond belief to this, but I'll ask you to think into your past for proof to this. (Ask me and I *will* cite examples, you can take that as a threat if you choose, though it wasn't intended to be.) Porn does change how you see things, but so does the bible (sex slaves are legal according to biblical law), the koran (72 virgins anyone), the phone book (read the yellow pages some time), the internet (SG, etc), your friends (both in opinion and in the people you're likely to have sex with), etc, etc, etc.

Does that make porn to be a bad thing? Dunno. I'm guessing that it's no worse than religeon or your friends.

no shit! i was just about to say that. what's so wrong with having your own strong sexuality as a woman? nothing as far as i've seen so far. i've reaped nothing but the benefits of my sexual attitudes.

Extra-curricular stuff is what they're supposed to do, so they dont go all wacky in the head.

you're right, people should keep being ashamed for liking/collecting/selling/being involved in porn because we all want to feel a lil' dirty.

Oh no, we're wacky already from the insane shit we learn. Do you know how to remove someone's hunger drive and desire to eat with just a powerdrill and a soldering iron? cos I do. And you really don't want to get my chem-engineering friend started on "101 things you shouldn't inject yourself with"
