The Tribeca Film Festival starts Tuesday, April 25, and features over 200 films screening over the next two weeks throughout New York City. The New York Times say the lineup is "Long on Reality, Short on Fluff," and the festival's website has trailers o' plenty. "Air Guitar Nation" documents the U.S Air Guitar Championship. "Alone with Her" is the story of a "21st-century peeping tom gone bad" and was shot using only hidden cameras. "Colour Me Kubrick" stars John Malkovich as the man who pretended to be Stanley Kubrick. "The Falling Man" is a short film inspired by a New York Times photograph of a man falling from the World Trade Center on 9/11. And, "Tierney Gearon: The Mother Project" is a documentary of a provocative photographer's relationship with her schizophrenic mother.

Gearon rose to art-world prominence with a scandalous show at London's notorious Saatchi Gallery in Spring 2001, during which the London police nearly charged her with child pornography over certain images depicting her two children in the nude. Even though the uproar was absurd, the press had a tremendous impact on Gearon. She began to doubt herself as a mother, and as a result, the focus of her photography shifted from her children to her own manic-depressive, schizophrenic mother. With this intriguing mother-daughter dynamic in mind, the two directors explore Gearon's mother's psychological problems, which began when Gearon was a young teen and resulted in the rupture of her parents' marriage. Years later, Gearon's own failed marriage proves to be one of the catalysts for her immersion in photography. Throughout the film Gearon maintains that photography is her way of documenting her family while undertaking a kind of expressive self-examination. According to her, all of her photos are portraits of herself.

Also, the Festival is showing "Roof Sex," a one-minute, 2002 short starring "'chair-on-chair' action," and a promo of one of the most amazing shorts I've ever seen: "The Sex Life of Robots: The Teaser."
