Sculptor Marc Quinn has unveiled a sculpture of life-sized Kate Moss, 32, in a yoga pose to be displayed in a Netherlands gallery this month. The model took time out from her busy schedule modeling and mentoring young party girls long enough to be measured for the piece.

"I found a person who could do the yoga pose," said Quinn, "and we made a lot of drawings, photographs and measurements. Then Kate came into the studio. I'd done some life casts of her in the past, and we made more measurements and photos. From all that we sculpted Kate's body in the pose; this is her body and her proportions."

For those of you immediately conjuring images of the minimalist white Britney Spears Pro-Life celebration statue, Quinn's piece has deeper meaning.

"She is a contemporary version of the Sphinx. A mystery. There must be something about her that has clicked with the collective unconscious to make her so ubiquitous, so spirit of the age," Quinn said. "When people look back at this time she'll be the archetypal image, just as Louise Brooks was in the 1920s. For me as an artist it's interesting to make something about the time I live in."

This is not a personal portrait of Moss; the work makes no attempt to convey her inner life. "It's a portrait of an image, and the way that image is sculpted and twisted by our collective desire," Quinn said. "She is a mirror of ourselves, a knotted Venus of our age."

Sadly, there was no comment from Pete Doherty or mention of a gallery security plan to keep him from any interaction with the statue.

Okay. All I'm saying is that scary life-sized sculptures of stupid celebrities doing stupid things better not be the next "in" thing, because if it is I'm going to go drown myself in my bathtub.

So then I should scrap my plans for a Gwyneth Paltrow breast feeding on a trapeeze sculpture?

I collect odd-ass salt shakers. Last month I bought a monkey with a fez on. You can't beat a monkey wearing a fez.

A few months before I bought a pair of chefs, one white and the other black. I briefly considered it a "racist antique," until I realized that these two chefs were plainly equal in position. Though I'm not sure if they had the customary different number of holes (three or four?) in the tops of their heads.

it really bothers me that she is not IN the possition but rather sculpted mid motion getting into possition.

I think it fails to capture much of anything other than Kate Moss as a caricature of a half way there contortionist.

What's up with art this days? Why is it suddenly so very in to make sculptures portraying celebrities doing things they haven't really done?

from the title and the first few lines I wondered wouldn't it be far more interesting if the artist had made said sculpture using kate mosses own shit seeing as it seems both she and the artist are full of it .

Picasso's "Lohan Reading Tolstoy" started the trend.
