Scientology couple John Travolta and Kelly Preston stirred public interest as a result of accusations they deprived their son proper medical treatment for autism. The parents denied claims their son is autistic, insisting 14-year-old Jett suffers from Kawasaki Syndrome, a condition that causes fever, rash, swelling of the hands head and feet.

Kelly claims Jett contracted the illness from carpet-cleaning chemicals and other environmental toxins. Some doctors reject the diagnosis partly because Kawasaki Syndrome most commonly affects Japanese children under five years old.

During a Montel Williams Show appearance, Kelly acknowledged Jett followed a detoxification regimen developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Within a few months, she said, "He ended up getting better," but still "has lots of allergies."

While the Travoltas stick to science fiction cures, critics suggest Jett suffers from Autism.

According to HollywoodInterrupted.com's Mark Ebner, that diagnosis has been corroborated by "no less than five sources (including a media rep from the Autism Society of America, an executive from Cure Autism Now, a major Hollywood producer and parent of an autistic child, and a Hollywood actor-parent)." Officials at two autism groups declined to discuss Jett's condition when we called yesterday.

If Jett is autistic, CultNews.com's Rick Ross suggests, Travolta and Preston may not have sought treatment because Jett "would have go to psychiatrists, and that would be contrary to the teachings of Hubbard." As it happens, Travolta's brother, Joey, has produced a new documentary about autism, "Normal People Scare Me," co-directed by high-functioning autistic teenager Taylor Cross and his mother, Keri Bowers.

Travolta, Preston, and their reps decline further comment on the matter.

how do you "confuse" autism with a fever? frown

Sounds to me kinda like the parents who prayed while their boy died of a bee sting because christian science doesn't believe in medications.

They are too busy with Britters and K Fed to handle this sort of thing.

Actually, in all seriousness, autism is really difficult to treat depending on its severity. I hope this is all just a public front they are putting up and that the child is getting the treatment he needs. They can certainly afford it...

Seriously though, how the hell is Kawasaki Syndrome ANYTHING like autism? Last time I checked, the mental disorder autism was not catagorized by swelling and a rash. shocked

Interesting. I always thought Kawasaki syndrome caused people to buy shitty motorcycles. Good to know.

This really is awful. The psychiatrists are not going to mentally harm or kill your kid, you neglectful freak bastards.

I have seen some autitistic children who also have nutritional problems symptomatic of gluten allergies and other allergies which are often misdiagnosed, causing swelling and rashes as part of the allergic response. this is all i can think of...

You would think, I was just commenting on the main thing I know of the disease, that it is often misdiagnosed because of other disorders for which Medical Nutrition Therapy (what I currently study) can be helpful.

Oh, I'm not arguing with you at all; I'm just expressing frustration that one would be so in denial about their own child's health.
