Precisely. Alyk and Lilyk actually write, whereas a lot of the new writers simply do not. There are a million stories I would like to write for Politics right now, but it has been made clear to me that I was not wanted and that I will not be coming back. It's a little perverse to go blame the output on those that are doing their job.

You should submit them and watch them not get published, like I did last weekend. It's a great waste of 15 minutes. I know now that from this point forward, if I think something is interesting in politics and I want others to see it, just stick it straight on the board.

Sad it's come to that. I believe I've written a total of 4 articles for the newswire since I joined, and I always thought I'd start writing them more regularly someday. Guess I don't need to bother from now on...

For what it's worth, Politics is in a bit of a transition right now, since Shalome stepped down. It's only got two dedicated editors right now, one of whom is brand-spanking-new, the other of whom hasn't commented since he left the country for Lebanon, and both of whom are more writing-oriented than editing oriented, but will hopefully pick that up as they get into the swing of things. Please don't give up submitting stories to Politics, just understand that right now isn't the greatest time in the history of that section for member submissions.

I hope you don't just stick them on the board: you've written some of the best, most thought out stories from a non-politics editor that have ended up on the Politics newswire.

Bean, is it right that the three Lead News Editors have access to all the queues?

Yeah, but I don't know how often they go through it. Just as a general rule, it seems like member submissions are more likely to get published when there's a dedicated editor who's been told to look at the queue and go through member submissions, just because the lead editors have a lot on their plate and aren't focused on that task. But again, that's just how it looks to me from my point of view. At this point, since I'm not actually involved in that side of things except as an observer (and as we're getting way, way, way off topic), I think any questions about how things work and what the status of things are would be more likely to be answered by someone with more direct knowledge than me if they were asked in the News group.

Would a compromise be the abilitiy to ignore a certain type of news story? If people want to discuss celebrities, I think they should be able to. But for the many people who'd rather discuss the other types of news, it's just cluttering up the news spot on the Boards page and blocking out the stories they might actually be interested in. At least three of the top five active stories are Celeb at any given time.

Of the past 40 articles, the breakdown has been:
Celeb 16
Music 10
Culture 7
Geek 5
Politics 2

Celebrity stories are dominating the newswire, especially considering the section wasn't even around a month ago. And on the same hand, if someone doesn't care about technology or politics (even though I'm sure it's a fraction of how many people don't want to read gossip), they would be able to ignore those sections, too. Is that reasonable?

I hope I'm not the only one that finds this thread hilarious.

I certainly do...

O, and also, because I would not want to leave this thread without proving a point of some sort...

Well, you can click on the News tab at the top of your page. You can click on that and see all the news stories listed by section, rather than just relying on the top five stories. smile

...but that would take like 5 EXTRA seconds and I have so many better things to do with my time.
