Seriously. My front door lock apparently broke and will not open from the inside. I turn it, it clicks, but it doesn't unlock.

I live in a loft that has no windows I can get out.

I am locked INSIDE my house. surreal

I called some friends to see if they would come over and I could give them the key under the door to see if the lock will open from the outside... but no one is home. I left messages. frown

So.. uh.. any suggestions on how to get this damn door open?

Does your place have a manager or maintenance person of some sort?

I'd have to call the landlord, which I'm trying to avoid because he is a gruff scary man, and we have a dog we never paid a deposit for, and the house is trashed.

any chance picking the lock? I worked at a gas station and we used to have to open the bathroom or storage shed door when people locked the key in. All you really have to do is get something in between the door frame and the door and push the latch over with it while simultaneously turning the knob. I found scissors work nicely as the sharp edge grabs the latch.

Get a screwdriver and take the knob/lock mechanism off if you can.

That's just plain fucked up. Do you know any neighbors you could call?

If you call the landlord, not only with the dog and the trashing, but they will charge you ... especially on a Sunday. Yes, I know this from experience ... but I was locked OUT. I had to pay $35 to have someone let me into my own apartment.

Well, I called OBD to come help me.. but in the meantime, upon closer inspection, it looked like this had happened before -- there were the kind of marks on the lock that you get from gripping it with pliars.

So, I got out the pliars.

I can now get out of my house. smile

However, I believe I broke the lock entirely. surreal

Ok....trust me.

Against one of your bare walls.....draw a door with a piece of chalk. After you do that, knock three times.

The landlord doesn't have to know I broke the lock. I just have to say "Hey, my lock stopped working, replace it!"

Or if you're worried about the landlord finding out about the dog and what not, go buy a new lock and put it in. You can do it.

Cash and I could've come over with a halligan, a flat head ax, and a K-tool and gotten you out. Your lock would've DEFINITELY been broken after that, though.

I have to admit...this sounds like something Lain would have done. Maybe you should stay away from tacs & drinking glasses for the time being.
