Geek hero Kevin Smith recently finished writing part six of an extensive account of Jason Mewes' battle with drug addiction. Smith originally told the story to UPenn's student body as part of a speech. Celebrity gossip news sources reported on the speech, but chose to focus less on the serious aspects of the story, and more on the part about Nicole Richie dragging Mewes into a bathroom stall and fucking him. Feeling his friend hadn't been given the proper credit, Smith set to work posting the entire thing to his blog.

Smith's posts, entitled "Me and My Shadow", are certainly a must read for Jay and Silent Bob fans.

The part was peppered with his colloquialisms and catchphrases, written to Jason’s intonations and verbal patois. And yet, after reading the script, Mewes first words were “I don’t know if I can do this, man.”

“Why not? It’s just you on a page.”
“Yeah, but why would I say something like ‘Neh’?”
“I don’t know. Why DO you say something like ‘Neh’?”
“I do?”

I spent a month teaching Jay how to be Jay, during which time I accepted the fact that I’d never be able to pull off the role of Randal – the part I’d written for myself – and concentrated on finding something else for me to do in the flick, on camera. Since the part didn’t require the memorization of any lines, I opted to slip into the role of Jay’s quiet muscle, figuring Mewes and I would at least look visually interesting standing beside one another (him wiry and full of energy, me not). And together, dressed in costumes not at all unlike what we normally wore at the time, we became Jay and Silent Bob, the neighborhood drug dealers.

The great irony, of course, is that it’d be drugs that would one day not only threaten the continuation of Jay and Silent Bob, but also Jason’s life.

I've been reading this, and must say that Kevin Smith has got to be a saint for still being good friends with Mewes after all the shit he put him through, but I guess thats what friends are for.

I got to party with Jason a few years back when he was in town auditioning for a [non- Kevin Smith]film. He was originally supposed to be here for just a few days, but after finding a loyal fan base to give him room, board, and all the free drugs he wanted, ever the moocher he decided to stay a while and party.

Saw him several times over the course of his two week stay and he was ALWAYS in a blur; seemed things like walking and standing were often hard. He never spoke much... seems in real life "Silent Jay" would be more appropriate. Club kids would walk up and ask for an autograph or try to talk to him... and usually got ignored. If it was a really cute girl he might talk to her... if he could.

Not long after he left town I happened to meet up with the casting director/ producer who'd brought him here in the first place. She said Mewes showed up "drunk" for their first meeting, and within a few minutes was trying to convince her to sleep with him. She told him to come back the next day [sober] and they'd try for a fresh start. Apparently things didn't go much better in subsequent meetings. I asked if he got the part and she replied, "...know he'd draw a big audience to the film, but I'll be damed if I'm going to subject myself or the crew to his bullshit for as long as it takes to shoot the film."

Poor guy.... hope he doesn't wind up another statistic...

i am the tour photog for the wizard shows and tend to see those two fairly often and just shot a poker game in kevin's house earlier this month with jason as one of the players. he's been straight for 2 years or so and is very cordial and funny with the fans and people he meets during his appearnces. the fucked up/ useless jason i met at a dvd signing 5 years ago is so not the jason i see a couple times a year now. people come up to him in bars and offer drinks and drugs and he thanks them and tells them that he doesnt' do that any more.

he won't be a statistic.

I feel like I've heard all of this before.

Didn't he say all this in that "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD that was released like 4 years ago?

Nonetheless....nooch.

Good. Not that I want to see Jay & Silent Bob's Swollen Prostate Adventure, but it'd be nice if it didn't require CGI to do.

mewes came into my workplace several months ago, he seemed pretty sober and was VERY psyched about us selling a Super Friends t-shirt...anyway it was really cute cus the cashier (a self-proclaimed kevin smith junkie) didn't notice it was him until he presented his credit card, to which she exclaimed "are you for serious?" - looked up, and he responded with "are YOU for serious?" - we chuckled about that for a while...

I saw "An Evening With Kevin Smith" so I heard all the stuff about snoochie-boochie and whatnot, but he never mentioned Mewes' drug problem. I've only made it through the first three entries, but I'm already hooked. I've alwyas liked the two of them and have a new-found repect for Kevin Smith. He's the kind of guy I'd like to have on my side.

a few years ago, Jay was hiding out in Providence. I ran into him in a club, and he was shooting up at his table. Not in a backroom, or the bathroom, but at his table out in the open. It was a very sad scene. Good to see that he cleaned himself up.

I know this is a pretty serious subject but this quote made me laugh out loud:

I thought “This kid’s a comic genius. And if nothing else, he knows how to suck a dick. So if I ever get really bored hanging out with him, at least there’s always that to fall back on.”
