I'm lost
December 2004

Medical professionals are now releasing information concerning the world's largest recorded ecstasy user, a man claiming to have taken 40,000 pills in his lifetime. Only known to the public as “Mr. A,” the 37-year-old man is being studied by doctors at St. George’s Hospital in London.

Writing in Psychosomatics, they say Mr A reported he had used ecstasy between the ages of 21 and 30.

For two years, he took five tablets every weekend, rising to an average of 3.5 tablets per day for the next three years, then soaring to 25 tablets a day over the next four years.

After "collapsing" three times at parties, Mr A stopped taking ecstasy.

Although the drug use was being self-reported by Mr. A, the doctors note that his medical exams directly following his discontinuation of the drug confirm the abuse patterns.

"For a few months, he felt as if he was still under the influence of ecstasy and suffered several episodes of 'tunnel vision'.

"He eventually developed severe panic attacks, recurrent anxiety, depression, muscle rigidity (particularly at the neck and jaw levels)."

Mr. A admitted to use of other drugs in addition to ecstasy, such as “solvents, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, LSD, cocaine, and heroin.” During his medical examination, Mr. A reported cannabis use in order to curb his hallucinations and feelings of paranoia. He had no medical history of psychiatric problems and no family medical history of mental disease or disorder.

A brain scan performed on Mr. A failed to show any damaged portions or atrophies, therefore doctors are careful to label this case as "extreme" and in need of further study.

"This is probably an extreme case so we should not blow any observations out of proportion.

"But if this is what is happening to very heavy users, it might be an indication that daily use of ecstasy over a long period of time can lead to irreversible memory problems and other cognitive defects."

Martin Barnes, chief executive of the charity DrugScope, said: "It is possible to become psychologically dependent on the feelings associated with ecstasy but heavy daily use is extremely rare and it is not thought that people can become physically dependent.

"The short-term effects - in terms of impaired memory, sleep problems and the 'mid-week hangover' - are well documented, but less is known about the longer-term effects, particularly of prolonged use."

The previous highest total logged for the most pills consumed in an individual's lifetime was roughly 2,000 pills.

Back when I did drugs, X was still a drug that people talked about but no one ever had. It's one of those drugs I used to wish I tried, but at my age a couple of glasses of wine mess me up for days. skull

40,000? Seems like dope head exaggeration to me.

Except when he's under the brain scan, in which case he should be MR I.

It stated that there is not a scan sensitive enough to detect the damage done, which cannot be a good thing, either about the drug, his head, or the technology. robot

They could try a few different PET scans that wouldn't necessarily detect damage except on the large scale, but could show if brain function has diminished in any areas.

It turns out that the pot was causing his paranoia, panic attacks, and hallucinations. Original article here.

Actually, it sounds like the cannabis in his case justexaggerated symtoms already inherent, as they remained, to a lesser degree, after cannabis use was stopped.

Its highly dubious that any strain of weed would make someone hallucinate under typical cicrcumstances of ingestion, so I don't mean 10 bowls of kind, back to back, in 15 minutes.

I think the paranoia, and panic attacks were caused by the pot, whereas the hallucinations may have been the long-term effects of ecstasy. However, the rest of the symptoms seem to definitely be something else, assumedly the long-term effects of ecstasy. From the article:

He eventually developed severe panic attacks, recurrent anxiety, depression, muscle rigidity (particularly at the neck and jaw levels), functional hallucinations, and paranoid ideation. His family and before-drug-use psychiatric history were negative. The Mini-Mental State Exam revealed disorientation to time, poor concentration, and short-term memory difficulties. Decrease in level of cannabis intake led both to disappearance of his paranoid ideas and hallucinations and reduction of his panic attacks, but remaining symptomatology persisted.

i saw a show once where a guy had taken over 1000 in two years and his brain was so fryed he couldnt even make rational thoughts and talked slow and drunk sounding. ive known many of druggies who have exaggerated(S?) the amount and even the substances they took, so i think this class a loser is probably a liar.
