Hmmm...well, I don't know. Obviously the original is going to be superior (what could top that?), but the fact of the matter is, from reading that article I don't think I'm gonna malign it until I see it. I mean, sure, it'll probably suck reeeal hard, but you never know, I thought Jason X was genius. Either way, I'll go see it. Hopefully it'll be decent, but otherwise (and it probably will be otherwise) it'll at least be a half decent way to blow $7.

Thats nothing...they are making a new Re-animator film. Why must they keep on ruining the memory of a perfectly made shock horror movie by releasing all the bloody sequels?

At first I was really mad that they were remaking it, but then as it gets closer I am totally excited. I read a bunch of interviews and stuff and it sounds like it is a completely different film. Not so much a remake, but a actual completely different take on the old Ed G story.

Maybe it is just the original one was so real, and there is nothing real about the WB kids, but at least we get to see them die...

Who knows...it could totally own. We will all find out next weekend. Until then, Kill Bill

EDIT to add: SPOILER ALERT I figured most people have seen this original so this wouldn't spoil anything, but if you haven't........go rent it and watch it with all the lights out

I saw it. Here's what I posted about it on another board:

First of all I think we all have the same fundamental problems with this movie which are 1) Why REmake a movie? and 2) Why remake a PERFECT movie?

I tried to put those problems aside so I could watch the movie from an unbiased position and I must say it didn't suck as much as I expected. They left Leatherface essentially the same and that character is scary as fuck so it works. Also, the actor that bugged me was the first one to die, so that was nice. I won't go into all the stuff that was changed/different but I'll just say that they added totally unnecessary and, I might add, stupid subplots and left out what I thought were essential themes that I guess they just figured were over the heads of main stream movie-goers. So anyhow, my list of major grievances with the movie:

1) The whole parrallel that was drawn between the violence of the meat factory and the violence acted out in the movie was almost completely lost.

2) They showed Leatherface's face!! They even explained why he wears a mask!!!.........RETARDED!!!!

3) In the original, at the end you feel like the main girl has gone through absolute hell and she is never going to recover from what's happened to her. In this version, she's pretty rational through most of the movie and you get the impression that she can move on and get one with her life. Basically....Hollywood ending. They even decided to do the old disappearing blood trick so at the end she hardly even has any injuries. RETARDED.

4) Tied in with # 3), this is the one that bothered me the most. In the original the main character is a helpless victim being subjected to total hell, in this one she gets out of the helpless position and fights back and actually makes her escape on her own instead of sort of escaping by chance by jumping on a truck. I swear, at the end I immediately thought of the Destiny's Child song "Survivor" and people in the audience were clapping and going "you GO girl." RETARDED. They took one of the best horror movies of all time and made it PC. Instead of adding a new twist tot he original, they sapped it of what made it unique and turned it into a typical Hollywood movie.

5) The new subplots. There's a baby and some other stuff....it's stupid.

6) The whole scene where the family is torturing the girl.....gone.

7) I absolutely hate those cheap scares in all Hollywood "horror" movies where everything gets quiet for a second....you know it's coming....BAM! a loud sound! Oh my god it was just a cat who would have thought?!?!? I can't believe people actually fall for that. NOT SCARY! It goes against what made the first one so great.

So basically, they totally butchered the movie like I thought they would, but it's still scary and still entertaining. If I had never seen the original I might think it was good, but having seen it I still have to say it sucked.

I thought it was scary and I don't get scared easily, it's just that the I think the very concept of the movie is so wrong on so many levels.

i thought the original was boring. it would have been cool back in its day but after growing up on freddy, jason, and pin head, it is just missing something for me. i hope the new one makes me like it better and since they are re-relesing a new dvd of the old one. i will have to give it another try.

There is no way this can be good. It's a remake for teenagers too young to appreciate the original. With hot teens in the lead roles and cheap "scares" a plenty.
They should have called it "Texas Chainsaw 5" and shipped it direct to video. Crap crap crap...but then again, it is by the guy who gave us the lame Hollywood bullshit: Armageddon and Pearl Harbor. Need I say more?

thank you. sometimes i feel like i'm the only one who thinks that the original was boring. though i appreciate how innovative it was and that it was a college film and everything. i was bored and it was way too melodramatic. i think i was actually rooting for leatherface to kill everyone just so it would end. i'm going to give the remake a try though. the preview looks good.

i think it's really funny that people actually think this is the real story of ed gein, instead of just being loosely inspired by him.

There's a really great documentary that's shown on IFC a few times called "The American Nightmare" that deals with that whole sort of renaissance of the horror film in the '70s, focusing most directly on the work of Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and David Cronenberg's earliest work. It really goes into the whole social malaise that inspired the movies: the feeling, as the Summer of Love collapsed into Altamont and Kent State and the Manson Family, and as the casulties in Vietnam kept mounting, that the whole world was just unravelling. So since the world situation now seems to me to inspire that sort of thinking again, there's a lot of resonance in those movies still.

Anyway, if you see that that documentary's on, do catch it.
