The promotional poster for and a few movie stills from Marilyn Manson's forthcoming four-part film, "Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll," are now online. The film focuses on Carroll, played by Manson, as a man haunted by visions of the young Alice, played by model Lily Cole. Says Manson:
I want to take the childrens story that we all know, and discover the horrifying roots that grow beneath every one of its childish metaphors. The characters may be absurd and wrapped in puzzles, but, the author himself is the story that I find painfully close to me. Lewis Carroll is far more complex than the worlds narrow perception of him as a quiet deacon, a mathematician and a loner, simply obsessed with photographing young girls. He was possibly one of the most divided souls living in his own hell that the world has overlooked.
The problem with making a dark and disturbing version of Alice in Wonderland is that it's pretty dark and disturbing to begin with, which gives it little training wheels that help cultural firebrands ride it into geniusdom once every eighteen months or so. Masterminding a trippy reinterpretation of Lewis Carroll is like making a version of Crazy Traxi, only crazy! At this point, about the edgiest thing you could do with Alice in Wonderland is try to make it a little less fucking insane.
I'm really excited about this... and hearing that Tilda Swinton is in it makes me even happier! i'd really like to see the trailer to make sure my excitement isn't misplaced.
Well this could be interesting or totally self indulgent. Considering the source it stands an equal chance of going either way. But hey, this is reminicent of the creepy vibe of Portrait of an American Family which I've been so missing in Manson ever since.

This is exactly the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this.
why's that? i'm really not sure how this could be qualified as selling out at all.
right. it's not like a huge big-budget studio movie. it's something that he put together himself and has clearly come from his imagination and research.
