No...not snuff films, you sick little monkeys. I'm talking about actual snuff. I've only done it once.

I ended up talking to these Swedish guys who were vacationing in NJ. We were all out at a bar when I saw them pinch something out of a tin and snort it. The bar was kind of dark and I couldn't see what it was...but when someone snorts something off the back of their hand...it draws attention. They saw me looking and came over. I can't even pronounce their names...I think of of them was named Oorse. They were very friendly though. The one guy handed me the tin and said "You try some".

I'm not really in the habit of snorting things that strangers hand me in a bar. He could see my hesitation and said "Is no drugs...is snuff...is legal...is very good...you try...is okay"

I pinched off some and snorted it...at first it was strange...like a mild burning...but when it faded a little it was actually kind of nice...like a good nicotine buzz without the stink or bad taste of cigarettes or dip.

Just this past Friday I went to a German/American wedding here in Bavaria and one of the older german gents had some of that stuff. Some of the americans tried it and reported burning, runny noses and watery eyes. frown

Then this cute little blonde 11-year-old snorted some and smiled. smile

The next day we got the rundown. Apparently all Bavarian girls do that stuff from the time they're real, *real* young. Whenever Grandpa comes to a family gathering, he's always got his snuff.

Good timing, my main man.

This got me to look this up on wikipedia. I had no idea that the practice of sniffing snuff was so widespread in Europe. What you encountered might also have been "Snus", according to that article.

Ah... it specifically says it's supposed to be sniffed and *not* snorted. That's probably why the little girl did the stuff better than any of the Americans....

Interesting. I shall have to bookmark this... "wikipedia."

No you do snort it...

I doesn't burn all that much and it is a great buzz. I think is is more popular in northern Europe... I worked with a guy from Denmark that introduced me to it.

He also had me try this odd stuff that looked like black tar but was tobacco. It's kind of concentrated like hash and it is a paste. You roll it into a small ball the size of a BB and put it under your upper lip... between your lip and gums. If someone offers this to you and you are not a HEAVY smoker say no... I nearly passed out and got very sick.

I've never tried snuff, but I've always been a little curious about what it is. I Googled "snuff" before I realized what a bad idea it could be. However, I found this site which answered some of the questions I had.

We have that here in the south, too. It's called Copenhagen.

Oh, but there are some sorts that you snort, I'm pretty sure.

Ofcourse what's common in Sweden (and what Nemesis is thinking about) is what we call snus. It's a thick paste (sometimes comes in the look of small teabags) that you put under your lip.
It's nicotine, but it doesn't affect others, like smoking do. You can do it inside and some people say it's not as bad as smoking.

There's two types - European and American. European dry snuff is meant to be sniffed (NOT snorted), and the American snuff is put under the upperlip.

I use snuff, as does my wife and we really enjoy it. My wife uses it daily and our favorite type is " Loizbeck" Brazil-Schmalzer. It great when your on long plane flights and you can't smoke also.

In Russia it's still rather common, at but mostly they sell it at every tobacco kiosk in Moscow, but I suspect it's used by old women and provincial girls. It's wonderful when you have a cold and it clears the head and nose and according to my wife and grandmother, it also stimulates the Optical Nerve. How true that, I am not sure, but my grandmother lived to 91 and was still able to thread a needle without using glasses until the day she died.

In fact, I even have a antique silver snuff box and I generally take about four or five pinches of it a day. However, I've never seen it sold in America, so I suppose you'd have to order it over the internet were you to wish for some.

Oh, and as Katerina so kindly showed, Snus is nothing but Swedish Chewing Tobacco, sometimes they confuse Snus and Snuff in Sweden, why? I don't know. Yet ss that goes, I prefer Copenhagen Snuff to chew.

Well,. the Swedish kind (which must fall under the category of being european) you put under the upperlip. Theres the "teabag" kind of little pouches with it, and then theres "lössnus" (loose snuff) which is brownish goo in a little jar. Which make your teeth all stained after a while.

The Swedish snus is different from the European and American snuff I mentioned. It's made from steam cured tobacco instead of fire cured.

real snuff is different than dip. there is actual snuff (which is cured and cut differently than dip), which you sniff (thus 'snuff') and there is dip, which you put in your lower lip.

The European, sort of Empire-Victorian era snuff is cheap and comes in 31 flavors, at least. The specially cool varieties, in brands like Bernard Tabak, have a plastic container that is a convenient and handy way to sniff. Here's my source: http://www.snuffstore.co.uk/

The downside would probably be throat cancer in the long-run, but this store also offers herbal snuffs.
