When my cousin was really underweight while pregnant the doctor gave her a list of things to eat and drink, Guinness was one of the things. Lots of iron apparently.

That is crazy. I guess she can just say that it was doctor's orders. Wow.

though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just do your research. It's very possible.

California rolls are great b/c everything is cooked. Unagi is fine, anything pickled or smoked or cooked is fine.

Moderation with tuna and salmon is the key.

Unagi!!!

Yeah, I'm a dork.

Are you not supposed to eat sushi when you're preggo?

Big no-no. Really, there is a large list of fish that are not for consumption. Also, eating raw fish increases instances of bacterial infections and other gastric disasters...

It's the mercury and worms in some fish, not bacteria, that is the issue. Both can be avoided by eating fish not known for it's high mercury content and fish that is prepared(i.e. smoked salmon, freshwater eel, pickled mackerel, etc.) and any fish that has been frozen for 24 hours prior to being made into sushi is fine. You just have to ask the chef. My wife and I ate TONS of sushi while she was pregnant so we did our research. There is no concerns with breastfeeding(neither here nor there, just thought I'd throw it in)

Actually, it's the mercury and iodine, not worms tongue, (especially in lobsters, crabs, etc) that is the issue.

Pregnant women are only supposed to have no more than 12 oz of tuna and salmon a week (or any other kind of healthy fish). It's best to eat fish that are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids (I believe that's what they're called).

And, of course, stay away from anything that is not cooked thoroughly (like no cake or brownie batter because of the raw eggs).

Edited because I'm dyslexic.
And I can't spell tongue

Yeah, I would think so. I read an article this morning saying UK doctor advise pregnant women not to drink more than two pints of beer a week, and I guess since Gwyneth lives in the UK part-time, she might have a british doctor who has told her the same thing.

I heard that Guinness helps you produce more breast milk. I pretty sure thats an old wives tale Although some of those seem to be true, I'm not so in love with western medicine that I dont believe in alternatives.

Fresh, raw seafood is potentially risky because it can contain parasites such as tapeworm, which, if they grow large enough, could rob your body of nutrients needed for your growing baby. Freezing and cooking deep-sixes the parasites. For this reason, many Japanese restaurants that specialize in sushi use frozen rather than fresh fish.

That's just absolutely horrifying to me, pregnant or not. In my case, it would be not. But still, that's no reason to go getting tapeworms.

when my friend was pregnant (second trimester) she was all stressing about doing things properly and what she could, and couldn't eat, and her doctor told he o go home and have a martini. he was sort of kidding- but he told her (and I've read other places) that its totally fine to have a glass of wine or a beer while prego. just don't be geting drunk and shit.

Guinness is not vegan/vegetarian friendly because of the company's use of powdered fish bladder during production. They use it in all of their beers, as far as I know.

Hey wait.... is powdered fish bladder considered "unsafe, uncooked fish" the same way sushi is?? Gwyneth nooooooooo!
