December 2004

It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone, especially if you’re Tom Jones. The crooner, 65, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II today for “services to entertainment.” Surrounded by family and using his real name, Thomas Woodward, the Welshman received the honor at Buckingham Palace.

"I just hoped for it, all you can do is hope – you can never know."

Jones has performed royal charity concerts, the first in 1966. Jones’ hits include “What’s New Pussycat,” “She’s a Lady,” and “It’s Not Unusual." Stoned In Love, Jones’ new album, is a collaboration with Chicane set for release on April 24th followed by a fall tour with a final show in Glasgow.

"When you first come into show business and you get a hit record, it is the start of something," he said. "As time goes on, it just gets better. This is the best thing that I have had. It is a wonderful feeling, a heady feeling.

"Sometimes you just can't believe it, you think you have been dreaming."

No word on whether any panties were launched towards the dais, royal or otherwise.

"As one's limbs are too aged to remove one's knickers, one requests the assistance of the honourable Lord Welsleytubbins of Stratford Upon Avenshire in the performance of the deed. And, of course, as one's bloomers must not be allowed to touch the floor - lest Wales be returned to independence as decribed in the treaty of 1308 - one must also request that Sir Jones approach and allow one to secure one's delicates upon his forehead directly."

As someone who regularily has TJ on any given playlist on his ipod, I can honestly say this was a long time coming. He was always a knight in my eyes.

It's not unusual to be knighted anymore.
It's not unusual to be "Sir"ved anymore.
But when you see the Queen knighting singers any more,
it's not unusual to see Keith Richards cry.

My, oh my.
