Since the launch of Gawker Stalker, a map-based celebrity tracker consisting of civilian sightings of the famous, the mainstream media has picked up the story and is now debating whether or not the site promotes celebrity stalking. Recent sightings on Stalker include Al Pacino, Lindsay Lohan, and Madonna. Entries include the exact location and time of the sighting and a description of the stalked.

Linden Gross, the author of "Surviving a Stalker: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Yourself Safe," called the site irresponsible and "creepy."

"With celebrities, this is completely unwanted … an inappropriate pursuit of somebody that can escalate even if it starts off in a harmless way," Gross said. "You are putting a little target on somebody's back. … You are essentially giving to people who [may be] borderline in terms of mental health … a tool to jeopardize somebody's life."

Gross, who started an educational Web site called stalkingvictims.com, said that stalkers often aim to get a response out of the person they are stalking, even if it is a negative reaction.

"There's an obsessive quality with the whole stalker thing," she said. "In some ways they are so connected to the person they are stalking it sort of becomes their life. Any reaction is better than no reaction."

On the other hand, Gross acknowledges that public attention is often what propels these celebrities' careers.

absolutely it does. they try to defend it by saying that since it takes time to get the info up stalkers wont have time to get to the actual location. but they are so lying. basically you are telling these stalkers what neighborhoods these stars are in. i think this gawker stalker thing is bordering on evil

It's funny that people get their panties in a bunch when they realize their supermarket "Club Card" is tracking what they're buying, and then some of these same people will turn a blind eye to sites like this.

From the site:

"Just saw Kate Hudson buying tampons (super plus) and a bottle of Snapple at Duane Reade on 42nd & Lex. She was with an older woman who was bitching about the long line. Kate looked very Stevie Nicks circa 1987 (not good).

Yeah. This is wrong. People deserve basic privacy.

I'm appalled that some people have so little to do in their lives that they track celebrities. For Bog's sake, get a hobby.

I mean, one that doesn't involve invading people's privacy.

Kate Hudson can't buy tampons and Snapple without having someone report on it? Oh, what a bummer.

There's a reason she gets paid $10 million per movie, and it's not because of her prodigious talent--it's so she can pay someone else to buy her fucking tampons. That's an obscene amount of money and certain disadvantages come with it.

If you can look at this photo and not wonder, "Why the fuck does she look so bloated?" then I guess you're a better person than I am and right in being appalled by people like me.

So just because someone is rich and in the public eye makes it okay for random strangers to stalk and document every minute aspect of their lives? I sincerely hope you don't actually believe that.

the whole of it all wrong and both parties are to blame and be held accounted for.
i hold a lisense to be a bodyguard. and i will tell you from trainning and experience, there is no way to stop a joe q. amature from doing something totally insane at any momment of everyday.
so when the media hyperboyle continues to sensationalize and just basicly throw it in our faces then maybe there will be a rational solution the the ills of a very sick few in socitey.
didn't any one ever tell someone that it's nice to be important, athough it is always important to be nice.
and not creepy or porfane for that matter.
and now more than ever...
so it goes...
I suppose...

I absolutely believe that "in the public eye" means "in the public eye." And yes, I believe that celebrities paychecks are cushioned so they can hire personal assistants and security.

It's ridiculous to blame accuse Gawker of promoting threatening behavior--people like John Wilkes Booth and Mark David Chapman were around long before that webiste.

I take public transportation everyday, which means I have some asshole staring over my shoulder everyday.

Caring about what you're favorite celebrities are up to is human nature. Do you read you're favorite Suicide Girls' journal and check out the candid photos she's posted?

So you would be okay with that guy posting the details of your life all over the internet for everyone to see?

And yes, I do read many of the girls' journals and check out their pictures. However, I've actually talked to or met most of them so it's far from creepy, one-sided observation.

Has anyone who's complaining even looked at the site, because if you think "Saw Robin Williams filming a movie" or "Liam Gallagher was walking down 8th st" is "Posting the details of [ones] life", or that it's anything new in the world, you're crazy.

Well, I guess there are a lot of creepy members of SG around, myself included.

And if someone that I rode the train posted the details of my life all over the internet, I would think it was fucking hilarious. So hilarious that I would probably stalk him in return for being so rad.
