Domino's Pizza magnate and staunch Roman Catholic Tom Monaghan has been backpedaling in regards to plans for his utopian town of Ave Maria, near Naples, Florida. Along with his partner, real estate developer Paul Marinelli, Monaghan originally intended for Ave Maria to be governed by strict Roman Catholic principles—principles that would, of course, outlaw abortion, pornography and birth control.

With civil libertarians arguing that the plans are unconstitutional, Monaghan has modified his statements, claiming that his extreme Catholic ideals will apply only to the town's Ave Maria University, which will be the first Catholic University built in America in approximately forty years.

The town and the university, developed in partnership with the Barron Collier Co., an agricultural and real estate business, will be set on 5,000 acres with a European-inspired town center, a massive church and what planners call the largest crucifix in the nation, at nearly 65 feet tall. Monaghan envisions 11,000 homes and 20,000 residents.

Monaghan is bankrolling these projects with the fortune made from selling Domino's Pizza in 1998. Both the town and university of Ave Maria are set to open in 2007.

Remind me, please...

Which Amish billionaire designed a town for 20,000 residents, retained ownership of all commercial property, and restricted non-Amish citizens from selling any form of birth control within the 5,000 acres of the city limits?

'Cause it's not ringing a bell...

Yeah sorry, but Dominoes makes the worst pizza of any of the major chains. I'd take turns-to-cardboard-in-30-minutes pizza from Little Caesar's before Dominoes.

Apparently neither of you have been drunk at 11:00 at night and needed pizza, because then it's the best thing in the world. And I didn't even know Little Caesar's existed anymore.

it's better than Papa John's. their sauce is so goddamn sugary, it's disgusting. and the crust is basically inedible.

Domino's is really my favorite out of all the deliveries anyway. i get it for free a lot cuz i work across the street from the local shop and have friends who do delivery. we tend to get the orders that people cancelled after the pies had been made. biggrin

mmm, REAL pizza....unfortunately up here, there's no authentic Italian restaurants. pizza in Naples = BEST EVER. closest i ever had was in NYC at a place that had just been opened like the night before by an Italian family. sooooo good. i would KILL to get more authentic pizza around here but the closest i can get is taking a trip to the Macaroni Grill for a margherite.

Well, when I say real pizza, I mean real american pizza. But yeah, Napolean pizza is good stuff, though I've never actually had it in Naples.
But, like with bagels, you can't get a proper pizza crust more than 2 hours outside of new york city.

Actually, I can't really decide what kind of pizza is my favorite, I like them all. I really did enjoy Original Ray's pizza in Manhattan though, yum.

Once on MTV cribs (I was bored) it showed that guy from Virgin Records, and he has a tropical island. I don't think there is one door in the place, and even the crappers were outside! It was kind of cool.

Meh. I order whatever I can order online. Mostly this has meant Pizza Hut, sometimes Papa John's. Domino's doesn't make the list because, idiots that they are, they have a website but only introduced online ordering a little while ago and it doesn't work in my area.

Otherwise I think they all have their benefits. Pizza Hut has stuffed crust. Domino's has the unlimited toppings 3 for 7 each pizzas and more interesting specialty pizzas. Papa John's has higher quality and includes dipping sauce with the pizza.

No Little Caesar's or Godfather's around here anymore. Not aware of any other pizza chains that are or were in the Twin Cities area.
