Actor and musician Isaac Hayes has quit as South Park's voice of Chef, citing what he perceives to be the show's growing religious intolerance.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

That's a shame. He's been one of the best parts of that show.

Lameness! Matt Stone's right on, too. You can't be faithful to a show for years when they're making fun of every other religion, and then get your knickers all in a twist when they do a show about yours.

Yep. Almost ten years worth of making fun of everything and now he decides to take a moral stand? Whatever. He was good, but not irreplaceable.

Have fun in obscurity again, Isaac.

Is it just me, or does anyone else out there think that 'southpark', 'team america' etc are actually extreme rightwing/conservative shows sneaking in under everyone's radar as 'outrageous alternative' - whose views ultimately support the current wave of bigoted conservatism sweeping the world?

To me, South Park does a brilliant job of tweaking right-wing memes to absolutely tear them apart.

I mean, if anyone thought Team America was an endorsement of Bush's foreign policy, I dont' know what to say to you.

the only thing surprising here is how long it took to leave the show. i mean, the scientology episode was on last october, wasn't it? maybe he asked for a raise and didn't get it or something.

It really IS just you.

Here's the silver lining - you should take comfort in the fact that you have a different view about something than literally everyone else on the planet. You renegade, you. wink

Who cares about the politics, its construction paper children with foul mouths. It just proves that no matter how obscene, racist, or just plain un-PC it is, it is ok just because it is a cartoon. Look at Drawn Together. It's a great thing we have here, plus its an excuse for me to still watch cartoons.

Thanks for at least trying to have a discussion smile

Everyone else seems content to go along with the mob rules theory.

From watching southpark and team america, I really get that they support the war.

This is what's wrong with the fucking entertainment industry.

Why can't people just watch it, and fucking enjoy it?

Who cares if its fart-jokes, politic-cracks, religious-movements, etc. Just fucking take it as it is, and enjoy it.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker are fucking Gods in my book, and if they do something I disagree with, I still fucking laugh. (In celebrity roasts, do people get pissed off? No. Why?)

It's called a sense of fucking humour.

People like you a whole lot better if you have one.

"Well lemme sing you a song about it..."

Isn't there a soundboard for this type of thing already?!

Having a sense of humour and having an opinion are not mutually exclusive - but having an opinion sometimes means you don't find some things funny... even if people don't like you.
