What he's doing now... just screened his new film, Shortbus, at the Cannes Film Festival. I was lucky enough to get to see a screening. Yay! He came by the American Pavilion with several of the cast members, spent time talking to all the film school interns working there, and helped us host Queer Night and Karaoke Night parties at the Pavilion. They were separate events... although a combined Queer/Karaoke night would have been great, too. The film is well worth checking out... a very refreshing take on sex in cinema. As he described it, so much of what happens in cinema revolves around situations that are metaphors for sex, but in Shortbus, sex becomes a metaphor for various other facets of characters' lives. It's fantastic the way the film captures real intimacy through the awkward, goofy, odd situations that come about during sex. Can't wait for the DVD, which is certain to include a ton of footage from the very long developmental process of the film.
Here's a fun photo of what Hedwig's doing now: karaoke... singing "New York, New York":
I saw it at cannes, wasn't all that sexy frankly, but I liked it in a quirky film festival I'd never normally watch this kind of way.
also saw red road which was much better.
Missed Red Road, but saw "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", which was very good. The Borat movie kicked ass, though. It's piss yourself funny throughout.
A propos of John Cameron Mitchell and Shortbus, however, I would have to agree that it's not sexy per se, but it's clear that's not what he was going for. To steal a line from Mooj (The 40 year Old Virgin): It's not about the pussy juice cocktails and the dirty sanchez, it's about love, it's about connections.
