From coast to Catholic coast yesterday, Archdioceses were considering putting an end to their adoption services. In both Massachusetts and California, where state law requires the recognition of gay parents, Bishops struggled to choose between church teachings and state anti-discrimination legislation—ultimately going with faith. After unsuccessfully seeking an exemption from the law, Archbishop Sean O'Malley officially withdrew Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of Boston from social work involving adoption. In California, Brian Cahill, executive director of Catholic Charities in San Francisco, is worried that events in Boston might require his agency to halt adoption services, as well.

Oh no. frown I can understand their reasoning for shutting down (faith vs. law), but churches often provided very cheap (practically free) adoption services. I was adopted through the local Catholic diocese, and my parents only had to pay about $500, which included service fees for long distance calls, paperwork, the social workers' time, etc.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the U.S. Government just wants girls to throw their babies in dumpsters, y'know, because that's way more humane than abortion.

Provided you picked the right dumpster (the one behind Ruby Tuesday's, for instance), there'll probably be enough in the way of leftovers to keep the kid alive until he or she's old enough to join the army's new hobo division.

It's good to see that church dogma superceeds the need of a child to have a home. It really reinforces all that compassion and love that jesus spent so much time talking about.

However this is obviously better than the exception the bishop was looking for right? all they wanted to do was make sure they werent sending children into a home with 2 fathers. Agree with it or not its against thier faith and no one should be forced to do something they view as wrong. Expect more people to just give up and find somewhere else to spend thier money when laws force them to behave a certian way.

If you're referring to catholic charities you should be sure to note that as they are NOT a state agency and are doing their work CHARITABLY, they have every moral and legal right not to have to continue services which would contradict their religious views.

Frankly, I think it is patently absurd that the state couldn't make an exemption.

For all of those "anti-religious" types out there who claim to be socially liberal it's important to note that (at least in illinois) Lutheran social services, jewish social services and catholic charities make up about 60-75% of the social services support network.

Maybe it's time the state should step up to the plate and take on their fair share rather than giving tax breaks to the rich?

This is the states saying, very simply, our values are superior to your values, therefore we will legislate our values to make you comply with them.

This should worry everyone.

You're absolutely right, the state of Massachusetts really should have thought this policy through a little more before they made it law. With full knowledge that the Catholic church opposes both contraception and abortion, they should have foreseen the problems this legislation would cause.

I can't stand the path this country is deciding to take. I aknowledge that in the past 15 years this country has taken huge steps and advancements in gay rights and acceptance, but now it seems we're taking two steps down the proverbial ladder. Is this trend of religious pretentiousness one that that will continue to rot society, or are we just temporarily losing our grasp of the concept of freedom and the rights of the poeple? I stand for the morals and ethics that religion is supposed to advocate, but there are always going to be grey issues, and if those issues lead to the church eliminating something as important as finding proper homes for orphaned children, then they are grossly missing the point.

I can go on for hours on how the contents of this submission disgusts me on so many levels, but I won't for now because it's 4AM in NY, I'm jetlagged, and I have to be up in four hours for a 16 hour workday. I would, hovever, like to applaud HELENNAOMI for submitting such a thought provoking article.

Your points are valid except for that this whole country isn't Catholic. The Catholics are doing this.

You'll see it says:

In both Massachusetts and California, where state law requires the recognition of gay parents, Bishops struggled to choose between church teachings and state anti-discrimination legislation—ultimately going with faith.

So if anything, Catholic leaders are only proving yet again how backward they are compared to the rest of the country.

The Catholic state(s)?

Not at all. I am speaking of the government imposing its values on all citizens under their jurisdiction. To me, this is the issue.

If you applaud such state action, I suppose you must also support states that consider thier anit-abortion values more important than an individual woman's values.

While I know that nearly all, if not absolutly all reading this thread, people would fall on one side on either issue. The process, though, is the same.

That concerns me. I do not like the government, or anyone else, telling me what to do.
