I set aside the snarkiness, creepiness and silliness to pronounce my love for RayBan Wayfarers.
They were the only glasses I knew.
The rock stars wore them, the hippies wore them, mohammad ali wore them... and my dad wore them. When I turned 13, I 'borrowed' his pair - an early 60s version he wore as a thug in high school and later as a cop in nyc. They were made of heavy plastic when plastic was still toxic. I broke them learning to ski. I bought my own pair, a lighter version typical of 'sometimes you got to say what the fuck' risky business 80s parodies. I left those in a girls room, and then repeated that event many times since the 80s.
Since then I have boughy red ones and white ones - the madonna years, tortoise shell ones - the bud foxx years, and now again i keep a pair everywhere I sleep, work and drive.
When people see me they snark... Panda, 'where are your sunglasses"?
I love them too. I bought them to look like Bob Dylan, and I've seen old pictures of JFK and John Lennon (who was, in turn, trying to look like Dylan) wearing them. They sort of encapsulate the style of the 60's to me, that cool beatnik darkness, though they are usually best remembered for their 80's popularity.
Ditto but I couldn't hold onto a pair of them to save my life. I must have gone through five pairs of them through Jr. High and High School. Hard earned money down the toilet and I'm talking 1980's dollars mind you.
