As we're both heavy gamers, we don't often have that problem. However, if I do want to get his attention off the tv, I've found a strip tease in front of the tube and a few clever stretches pretty much makes him forget the game.
....then, if there's something I need to discuss, that's when I do it, while I have his...undivided attention. I believe in being evil to get what I want.
