i noticed a trend looking at peoples journal entries i noticed people complaing of insomnia. as if it is a curse.
i embrace my insomnia as most of my family embraces mental illness. i find i am the most creative when i havent slept. but my insomnia is often self induced so that may be why others are complaining. but i have found several things that usually make me fall asleep so i just thought i'd share them with whoever else is awake.
1. heavy drinking
2.sex
3.masterbation.
4.heavy drinking and sex
5. a heavy workout
thats about all i have i wouldnt recomend heavy drinking and masterbation at the same time as your liable to fall asleep. and you know how lame you have to be to fall alseep on yourself? atleast with someone else to keep you awake( if they are good) you get teh full experience and can fall into a deep happy sleep immeadiatly afterwards. that is all i now return you to your regularly scheduled posting

Heh normally the reason I stay up sometimes is because I am in fact doing a new graphic or workign on a site...just generally being creative. My best stuff has always come between like 1am and 5am. Masturbating is usually enough to put me to sleep (after I've done my business) as long as it's late at night. Not like I'd pass out after jerkin it at 2 in the afternoon or something.

a concoction of valerian, skullcap, kava kava, passion flower, and chammomile, then some pot.
sex, masterbation, and drinking don't hurt either.

I normally don't mind insomnia.. it's not a problem on my nights off. But I work in a job that requires extreme attention to detail, and hours and hours of staring at a computer screen mentally analyzing data. I need to be alert when I'm at work, so insomnia is a major problem -- I think it's mostly caused by the fact that my apartment backs up to a busy street, and car noise is ungodly annoying when you're trying to get to sleep.

But yeah, a few rum and cokes don't hurt. wink

Alcohol is prolly the worst thing for insomnia. Yeah, it gets you to sleep, but you won't feel well rested in the morning.

Exercise (in bed or otherwise) is really the best thing. I've also read that making yourself stick to a schedule for going to bed/waking up really really helps.

they say that insomnia is from too much stress, depression, caffeine, whatever...theyre probably right. yeah, it feels better to veg out on 10+ hours of sleep. but gettin that 4 and taking some gas station speed to make up for it is much more fun.

There's a world o' difference between fighting sleep because your are having fun/being creative/with that special something and not being able to sleep when you want/need to; as someone who suffers from insomnia, I can tell you trying to get anything done after maybe 4 hours of sleep in four days becomes quite a chore. Maybe it's partly attitude, but it can only carry me so far before I begin to feel physically ill.

Regardless, eventually I got me some of those prescription drugs-- they'll get you over the worst of it, but eventually, you have to find something that will work for you-- I find reading something really boring helps, and as a result, have an arresting collection of amazingly dull books.

Between these thoughts and my fucking stomach flu, sleep has been rough for weeks. Never had much luck with melatonin, can anyone recommend any natural supplements? I've been doing 5-HTP for a couple of months...any thoughts or experiences to share about it?

Much appreciated.

5-htp gives me messed up dreams often involving talking animals. Give valerian a try though. Whenever I can't go to sleep I just play with myself, it always seems to work. kiss

*yawn*

this is getting out of hand. for the last month, i've only been able to sleep maybe 3 nights a week. i am too much of a pussy to tell my parents. i seem to be able to sleep only on night when i've been drinking heavily and that scares me to death. my brain won't be quiet. i lie in bed and have mental conversations with people i've never met, or i relive fun things that i've done recently, and i want to stop and fall asleep, but i can't. i have class in 2 1/2 hours. oh well, good night (haha yeah right)

K, I've been having the same problem. For the past month or two I've had terrible anxiety. I have problems getting to sleep to begin with, so this has been quite annoying for me. I end up falling asleep by 5am and then wake up in the afternoon. The crazy thing about it is that nothing will wake me up before (ex. clock radio, movement in the house, etc...) I went to the doc and he said we weren't controling my anxiety enough with the meds I've been taking, so he bumped me up. Maybe you should talk to your doc?

I suffered from serious insomnia 3 years ago when I worked hospital night shift. Even with blackened windows the slightest noise would have me wide awake. When I'd go into work I wouldn't have slept and then the adrenaline took over. I once went for 5 days without any sleep whatsoever and was hospitalized in the very same hospital I work at. They then prescribed me Ativan which did absolutely nothing. My body eventually gave up on itself and slept for awhile, the lack of rest had me delusional and seeing blurry.

I still suffer from insomnia sometimes, but it's not nearly as bad now that I work days and evenings. Usually days I go to the gym have me sleeping like a baby come nightfall. When you've got insomnia, you never really sleep, and you're never really awake. It's like a perpetual limbo of the body clock.

Props to those all dealing with insomnia, especially if it's induced by personal troubles, it's not easy. bok

Mine comes and goes. Some weeks I'm out and happy and rested in the morning, some nights I'm obviously exhausted but my brain refuses to STFU. I hate those nights where nothing but a strong dose of Sominex will put me to sleep, especially because I feel like such ass in the morning.

Things that have helped: sticking to my workouts (I run and lift weights every day), putting on my headphones and putting on some music I know will soothe my spirit, but not get me hyped, hot herbal tea. If nothing works, I do my best not to overthink it and beat myself up for being awake--it only makes it feel worse. I do boring household things like tidying and bill-paying, or if there's nothing else to do, I take pen to paper and let my mind wander.

Wow, a thread that was started about the same time i joined the site smile

Anyway ...

I'm currently going through the worst bout of Insomnia I've had since High School, and I'm not entirely sure of the cause, but its really beginning to have a negative impact on my life. I've ended up missing two days of work in the last few weeks because of sleep related issues, and I just can't stand it anymore.
My best hope is that the lack of sleep is being caused by a bad bed. I bought a Futon when I first moved to town for Grad School and after two years the thing has fallen apart. The frame is a mess and the mattress is so thin you can feel every bad underneath it. In an effort to correct the problem, I took the mattress off and have been sleeping on the floor; unfortunately, its hardwood and the thin mattress isn't helping there either. I'm going to be getting a new bed this weekend, so I hope that it fixes the problem.
The other cause I can think of is the bad break up that I'm currently going through. Previous bouts of insomnia usually come down to stress being a factor one way or another, and I suspect this one may be no different. In addition to the break-up, I'm also trying to get my Comprehensive Exams and my Thesis done for Grad School this semester, which is going to be a monumental amount of worke.
Either way, its driving me crazy. It seems like the only way I can get to sleep is to take Nite-Quill and then I usually sleep for an hour or two, wake up after a bad dream or something similar, and then can't fall back asleep again until 4 or 5 in the morning. Of cours,e I get up at 8 or 9ish, so its becoming a real issue. I'm barely awake during the day, but the second my head hits the pillow, at night, I cna't sleep.
